Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Peer-Based Agricultural Advisory Methods

Abstract

Peer-based agricultural advisory methods involve the exchange of agricultural knowledge, experiences, skills, and production information among farmers through informal and organized farmer-to-farmer interactions. Such methods can complement formal agricultural extension services by enabling farmers to share practical experiences and locally relevant solutions to production challenges. Farmers’ knowledge of peer-based advisory methods may influence their ability to obtain, evaluate, and apply agricultural information from fellow farmers. Assessing this knowledge is therefore important for understanding the role of farmer-to-farmer learning in agricultural information dissemination. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of peer-based agricultural advisory methods. The study will determine farmers’ level of knowledge of different peer-based advisory approaches, identify the methods commonly known and used by farmers, and assess their understanding of the benefits and limitations of obtaining agricultural information from fellow farmers. It will also examine farmers’ knowledge of how peer-based advisory methods can support the sharing of production information and practical farming experiences. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of peer-based agricultural advisory methods, farmer-to-farmer learning, peer information exchange, farmer discussion groups, lead farmers, experienced farmer demonstrations, cooperative-based knowledge sharing, informal advisory interactions, group meetings, agricultural experience sharing, technology information exchange, problem-solving discussions, and practical peer learning. Information will be obtained from farmers to determine their understanding of peer-based advisory approaches and identify areas where knowledge gaps may exist. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data and determine farmers’ levels of knowledge. Knowledge scores will be developed from relevant responses, while appropriate inferential statistical methods may be used to examine associations between farmers’ characteristics and their knowledge of peer-based agricultural advisory methods. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of knowledge among farmers regarding peer-based agricultural advisory methods. Some farmers may demonstrate adequate knowledge of farmer-to-farmer discussions, lead farmer approaches, group learning, and experience sharing, while others may have limited knowledge of more organized peer advisory methods. The study may also identify differences in farmers’ understanding of the usefulness, reliability, and practical application of agricultural information obtained through peer interactions. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, farmer organizations, cooperatives, researchers, non-governmental organizations, and policymakers. It may provide information for designing extension programmes that incorporate appropriate peer-learning approaches alongside conventional agricultural advisory services. The findings may also assist extension personnel in identifying opportunities for strengthening farmer-to-farmer information exchange and improving access to practical agricultural knowledge. The study concludes that farmers’ knowledge of peer-based agricultural advisory methods is important for effective farmer-to-farmer learning and agricultural information exchange. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies and farmer organizations strengthen appropriate peer-learning activities through farmer discussion groups, practical demonstrations, lead farmer initiatives, and experience-sharing platforms. Extension personnel should also provide guidance that helps farmers assess and apply relevant information obtained through peer-based advisory interactions.
