Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Peer Learning Approaches in Agriculture

Abstract

Peer learning approaches in agriculture provide opportunities for farmers to share practical experiences, production knowledge, skills, and locally developed solutions with one another. Farmers often acquire agricultural information through interaction with fellow farmers, farmer groups, demonstration activities, and community-based learning arrangements. Effective peer learning can complement formal agricultural extension by creating opportunities for farmers to exchange information based on their practical experiences. Assessing farmers’ knowledge of peer learning approaches is therefore important for understanding their awareness and use of farmer-to-farmer learning opportunities. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of peer learning approaches in agriculture. The study will determine farmers’ level of knowledge of different peer learning methods, assess their understanding of farmer-to-farmer information sharing, and identify the approaches commonly recognized and used by farmers. It will also examine farmers’ understanding of the benefits and practical application of peer learning in agricultural production and farm management. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of peer learning approaches, farmer-to-farmer learning, knowledge sharing, farmer groups, experience exchange, peer demonstrations, study visits, lead farmer activities, group discussions, field observations, practical experience sharing, agricultural innovation exchange, and community-based learning. Information will be obtained from farmers to determine their understanding of peer learning approaches and identify areas where knowledge gaps may exist. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data and determine farmers’ knowledge levels. Relevant inferential statistical methods may also be used to examine associations between farmers’ characteristics and their knowledge of peer learning approaches in agriculture. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of knowledge among farmers regarding peer learning approaches in agriculture. Some farmers may demonstrate adequate knowledge of farmer-to-farmer discussions, group learning, field demonstrations, and experience sharing, while others may have limited knowledge of organized peer learning methods and their potential applications. The study may also identify specific areas where farmers require additional information and guidance to participate effectively in peer-based agricultural learning activities. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, farmer organizations, cooperatives, non-governmental organizations, researchers, and policymakers. It may provide information for developing extension programmes that incorporate peer learning into agricultural advisory activities. The findings may also assist agricultural stakeholders in strengthening farmer groups, practical learning activities, knowledge-sharing networks, and other community-based approaches to agricultural information dissemination. The study concludes that farmers’ knowledge of peer learning approaches is important for effective participation in farmer-to-farmer knowledge exchange and agricultural learning activities. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies and relevant organizations promote structured peer learning opportunities through farmer groups, practical demonstrations, field visits, group discussions, and experience-sharing activities. Extension programmes should also provide appropriate guidance to farmers to strengthen knowledge exchange and improve the use of peer learning approaches in agricultural development.
