Abstract
The study will assess farmers’ knowledge of responsible agricultural chemical use. Responsible use of agricultural chemicals is essential for effective crop protection, safe farm operations, protection of farm workers, and reduction of adverse effects on the environment. Adequate knowledge of chemical selection, handling, application, storage, and disposal can help farmers use agricultural chemicals appropriately and reduce the risks associated with misuse or improper application. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of recommended agricultural chemical use, including appropriate chemical selection, correct dosage and dilution, safe handling, use of protective equipment, proper application methods, storage procedures, waiting periods, and safe disposal of chemical containers. It will also examine farmers’ knowledge of precautions required before, during, and after the application of agricultural chemicals and their awareness of recommended instructions provided on chemical labels. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers in the selected study area, from whom a representative sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to assess farmers’ knowledge of responsible agricultural chemical use. The data collected will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, standard deviation, and an appropriate inferential statistical technique. The study is expected to reveal the level of farmers’ knowledge of responsible agricultural chemical use and identify areas of adequate and inadequate knowledge. It is also expected to provide information on farmers’ understanding of chemical dosage, safe handling, protective measures, application procedures, storage, waiting periods, and disposal practices. The findings will be useful to agricultural extension officers, agricultural development agencies, farmers’ organizations, and policymakers by providing information on farmers’ knowledge of responsible chemical use. The findings may also support the development of targeted extension education programmes, practical demonstrations, and technical guidance aimed at improving farmers’ understanding of safe and appropriate agricultural chemical use. The study will conclude that adequate knowledge is important for promoting responsible agricultural chemical use among farmers. It will recommend regular extension education, practical demonstrations, farm visits, and the provision of clear technical information on chemical selection, dosage, handling, application, storage, and disposal to strengthen farmers’ knowledge and encourage responsible agricultural chemical use.
