Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Seed Storage Container Selection

Abstract

Seed storage container selection involves choosing suitable containers that protect seeds from moisture, pests, heat, contamination, physical damage, and other conditions that can reduce seed quality during storage. Appropriate containers can help preserve seed viability, maintain germination capacity, and extend the period for which planting materials remain suitable for use. Farmers’ knowledge of suitable seed storage containers is therefore important for reducing storage losses and maintaining the quality of seeds between planting seasons. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of seed storage container selection. It will determine farmers’ level of knowledge of different types of containers suitable for storing seeds, examine their understanding of the characteristics of appropriate seed storage containers, and assess their knowledge of the relationship between container selection and seed quality preservation. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of plastic containers, hermetic storage bags, metal containers, woven bags, sacks, bottles, locally available storage materials, container durability, moisture resistance, ventilation requirements, pest protection, cleanliness, size, sealing properties, and suitability for different types of seeds. It will also examine farmers’ knowledge of proper container preparation, cleaning, labelling, and handling before and during seed storage. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their knowledge of seed storage container selection and related management practices. The data will be analysed using frequency counts, percentages, mean scores, standard deviation, and other appropriate statistical techniques to determine farmers’ overall knowledge levels and identify specific areas of knowledge gaps. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of knowledge among farmers regarding appropriate seed storage container selection. Some farmers may demonstrate adequate knowledge of commonly used containers and basic characteristics such as durability and pest protection, while others may have limited knowledge of moisture-resistant and hermetic storage options. The study may also identify gaps in farmers’ knowledge of container preparation, sealing, cleanliness, and suitability for different seed types. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, seed producers, agricultural research institutions, government agricultural agencies, community seed organisations, and researchers. It may provide useful information for developing extension education programmes that improve farmers’ knowledge of appropriate seed storage container selection. The findings may also assist farmers in reducing seed deterioration, maintaining seed viability, and minimizing losses associated with unsuitable storage materials. The study concludes that adequate knowledge of seed storage container selection is important for maintaining the quality and viability of stored planting materials. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension services provide practical training on the selection, preparation, cleaning, sealing, labelling, and management of suitable seed storage containers to improve farmers’ seed storage practices and reduce post-storage losses.
