Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Soil Moisture Monitoring Technologies

Abstract

Soil moisture monitoring technologies provide farmers with information about the amount of water available in the soil and can support efficient irrigation, crop management, and water conservation. Appropriate monitoring of soil moisture can help farmers determine when crops require water, avoid excessive irrigation, and improve the use of available water resources. Farmers’ knowledge of these technologies is therefore important for understanding their awareness and ability to apply modern approaches to soil and water management. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of soil moisture monitoring technologies. It will examine farmers’ level of awareness and understanding of different technologies used to monitor soil moisture and determine their knowledge of how such technologies can support agricultural production. The study will also identify the sources of information through which farmers acquire knowledge about soil moisture monitoring technologies. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of soil moisture sensors, soil moisture meters, tensiometers, capacitance sensors, resistance-based sensors, digital soil monitoring devices, remote sensing, satellite-based moisture monitoring, and mobile applications for soil moisture assessment. It will also examine farmers’ knowledge of the uses and benefits of these technologies for irrigation scheduling, water conservation, crop growth monitoring, and farm decision-making. Sources of information such as agricultural extension agents, farmer groups, technology providers, research institutions, social media, agricultural training programmes, and fellow farmers will also be considered. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their knowledge, awareness, and sources of information concerning soil moisture monitoring technologies. The data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation. Correlation and regression analysis will also be used to examine relationships between farmers’ access to information and their level of knowledge of soil moisture monitoring technologies. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of farmers’ knowledge of soil moisture monitoring technologies. Farmers may have greater knowledge of simple soil moisture assessment methods, while knowledge of digital sensors, remote sensing, and automated monitoring systems may be more limited. Inadequate extension information, high costs of monitoring equipment, limited technical training, poor access to technology, inadequate digital skills, and insufficient practical demonstrations may contribute to gaps in farmers’ knowledge. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, irrigation specialists, government agricultural agencies, technology providers, research institutions, agricultural development organisations, policymakers, and researchers. The findings may provide useful information for identifying knowledge gaps and improving farmer education on modern soil moisture monitoring technologies. The study may also assist extension organisations and technology providers in developing practical demonstrations and training programmes that make soil moisture monitoring technologies easier for farmers to understand and use. The study concludes that adequate knowledge of soil moisture monitoring technologies is important for helping farmers improve irrigation management, conserve water, and make informed decisions concerning crop production. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies should strengthen farmer training, demonstrations, and advisory services on soil moisture monitoring technologies and their practical applications. Collaboration among extension organisations, research institutions, irrigation agencies, technology providers, and farmer groups should also be encouraged to improve farmers’ access to appropriate soil moisture monitoring information and technologies.
