Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Supplemental Water Harvesting Practices
Abstract
Supplemental water harvesting is an important agricultural practice that can help farmers collect and utilize available water to support crop production during periods of inadequate rainfall. Proper water harvesting can improve soil moisture availability, reduce the effects of short dry periods, and support more stable crop growth. However, farmers’ ability to effectively apply supplemental water harvesting practices depends partly on their knowledge of suitable structures, collection methods, storage, and application techniques. Assessing farmers’ knowledge can therefore help identify areas where additional agricultural information and technical support are required. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of supplemental water harvesting practices. The study will determine farmers’ level of knowledge of water harvesting techniques, assess their understanding of appropriate methods for collecting and storing supplemental water, and identify areas where knowledge gaps may exist. It will also examine farmers’ knowledge of the application of harvested water for crop production and soil moisture conservation. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of supplemental water harvesting, runoff collection, rainwater harvesting, water storage structures, farm ponds, water diversion methods, storage tanks, catchment preparation, water conservation, irrigation application, soil moisture management, maintenance of harvesting structures, and efficient use of harvested water. Information will be obtained from farmers involved in crop production to assess their understanding of supplemental water harvesting practices. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate field observation methods. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data. Knowledge scores will be used to assess farmers’ level of understanding, while relevant inferential statistical methods may be applied to examine associations between farmers’ characteristics and their knowledge of supplemental water harvesting practices. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of knowledge among farmers concerning supplemental water harvesting practices. Some farmers may demonstrate adequate knowledge of basic rainwater collection and water storage methods, while others may have limited knowledge of runoff management, water harvesting structures, storage maintenance, and efficient application of harvested water. The study may identify specific knowledge gaps that limit farmers’ effective use of supplemental water resources. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, researchers, water management organizations, agricultural cooperatives, non-governmental organizations, and policymakers. It may provide information for developing farmer education programmes on practical water harvesting and management techniques. The findings may also assist stakeholders in promoting affordable and locally appropriate water harvesting practices that can improve farm water availability and support agricultural production. The study concludes that farmers’ knowledge is important for the effective planning, construction, maintenance, and use of supplemental water harvesting systems. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer education, practical demonstrations, and technical advisory services on water harvesting and management. Training should emphasize runoff collection, water storage, maintenance of harvesting structures, soil moisture conservation, and efficient application of harvested water to support sustainable agricultural production.
