Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Sustainable Agricultural Input Use

Abstract

The study assesses farmers’ knowledge of sustainable agricultural input use, focusing on farmers’ understanding of the appropriate, efficient, and environmentally responsible use of agricultural inputs in crop production. Agricultural inputs such as fertilizers, improved seeds, pesticides, herbicides, and organic materials play important roles in improving farm productivity. However, improper use of these inputs can result in excessive production costs, environmental degradation, soil deterioration, and risks to human health. Adequate knowledge of sustainable input use is therefore essential for promoting productive and environmentally responsible farming practices. The study will examine farmers’ knowledge of appropriate input selection, recommended application rates, timing of application, safe handling and storage, proper use of organic and inorganic inputs, and measures for reducing input wastage. It will also assess farmers’ sources of information on sustainable agricultural input use, including agricultural extension agents, fellow farmers, input dealers, farmers’ organizations, training programmes, and other agricultural information channels. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers in the selected study area, from whom respondents will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to assess farmers’ knowledge and sources of information concerning sustainable agricultural input use. Data obtained will be analysed using frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviations, while appropriate inferential statistical techniques will be employed to examine relevant differences and relationships in the data. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of farmers’ knowledge of sustainable agricultural input use. Farmers with regular access to agricultural information, extension services, training programmes, and reliable input-related guidance may demonstrate better knowledge of recommended input practices. However, inadequate extension contact, limited access to reliable information, high cost of inputs, poor availability of quality inputs, and dependence on informal sources of information may contribute to knowledge gaps among some farmers. The findings are expected to provide useful information to agricultural extension personnel, policymakers, input suppliers, farmers’ organizations, and development agencies on areas where farmers require additional education and technical support. Strengthening farmer training and extension education on correct input selection, dosage, application methods, safety measures, and resource conservation may improve farmers’ knowledge and encourage more responsible agricultural input use. The study will conclude that adequate knowledge is an important foundation for the sustainable use of agricultural inputs. It will recommend increased extension education, regular farmer training, practical demonstrations, accessible agricultural information, and stronger collaboration among extension personnel, farmers, and agricultural input stakeholders to improve farmers’ knowledge and promote sustainable agricultural production.
