Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Temperature Management for Fresh Produce
Abstract
Temperature management is an important aspect of maintaining the quality, freshness, and market value of agricultural produce after harvest. Fresh produce such as fruits and vegetables can deteriorate rapidly when exposed to unsuitable temperatures, resulting in moisture loss, quality reduction, spoilage, and economic losses to farmers. Farmers’ knowledge of appropriate temperature management practices can therefore contribute to improved postharvest handling, reduced produce losses, and better preservation of fresh agricultural products. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of temperature management for fresh produce. It will determine the extent to which farmers understand appropriate temperature conditions for handling, storing, and transporting fresh fruits and vegetables. The study will also examine farmers’ knowledge of cooling methods, temperature monitoring, shade management, cold storage, transportation conditions, and practices for reducing temperature-related deterioration of fresh produce. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of temperature management, fresh produce handling, postharvest management, cooling practices, storage temperature, transportation temperature, temperature monitoring, cold storage, shade provision, produce quality, spoilage prevention, and postharvest loss reduction. It will also assess farmers’ sources of information on temperature management and determine the contribution of agricultural extension services, training programmes, fellow farmers, market actors, and other information sources to farmers’ knowledge of appropriate temperature management practices. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their knowledge of temperature management practices and sources of postharvest information. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, and relevant inferential statistical techniques to determine variations in farmers’ knowledge according to selected characteristics, farming experience, extension contact, and access to postharvest information. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of farmers’ knowledge of temperature management for fresh produce. Farmers with greater access to agricultural extension education and postharvest information may demonstrate better knowledge of appropriate cooling, storage, transportation, and temperature monitoring practices. The study may also identify knowledge gaps relating to suitable storage temperatures, rapid cooling, protection from excessive heat, cold storage management, and the handling of fresh produce during transportation and marketing. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, postharvest specialists, produce marketers, agricultural cooperatives, government agricultural agencies, food supply chain organisations, and agricultural researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes on postharvest handling and reducing losses of fresh agricultural produce. The findings may also assist relevant agencies in developing practical training programmes that improve farmers’ knowledge of temperature control and fresh produce preservation. The study concludes that adequate knowledge of temperature management is important for maintaining the quality and reducing the postharvest losses of fresh produce. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies provide farmers with regular education on appropriate temperature management, cooling techniques, storage conditions, transportation practices, and temperature monitoring. Practical demonstrations and improved access to suitable storage and cooling facilities should also be promoted to strengthen farmers’ postharvest management practices.
