Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Urea Treatment of Crop Residues

Abstract

Urea treatment of crop residues is an important feed improvement technique that can enhance the nutritional value and digestibility of low-quality agricultural residues used for livestock feeding. Crop residues such as cereal straws and stalks are often available in large quantities but may have low nutritional value and poor digestibility when used without treatment. Proper urea treatment can improve the utilisation of these materials and provide livestock farmers with an additional source of feed, particularly during periods of pasture scarcity. Farmers’ knowledge of the correct procedures and safety requirements is therefore important for effective application of the technique. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of urea treatment of crop residues. The study will determine farmers’ level of knowledge regarding the purpose, procedures, materials, and benefits of urea treatment and identify areas where farmers may require additional technical information. It will also examine farmers’ sources of information on urea treatment and the extent to which agricultural extension services contribute to their knowledge of the practice. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of suitable crop residues for treatment, urea preparation, appropriate quantities and concentration, mixing procedures, moisture requirements, treatment duration, covering and storage, safe handling, ventilation, and appropriate feeding of treated residues to livestock. It will also examine farmers’ knowledge of the potential nutritional benefits, limitations, safety precautions, and factors that can affect the effectiveness of urea treatment. Sources of information such as extension agents, farmer groups, livestock specialists, research institutions, fellow farmers, and agricultural training programmes will also be assessed. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their knowledge of urea treatment of crop residues. Data will be analysed using frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations, while appropriate statistical techniques may be used to determine farmers’ overall knowledge levels and examine variations associated with their access to agricultural information, training, and relevant farmer characteristics. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of farmers’ knowledge of urea treatment of crop residues. Farmers who have greater exposure to agricultural extension services, livestock training, practical demonstrations, and reliable technical information may demonstrate higher levels of knowledge. However, inadequate extension contact, limited practical training, lack of appropriate treatment materials, concerns about safety, and insufficient understanding of treatment procedures may contribute to knowledge gaps among some farmers. The study will be useful to livestock farmers, agricultural extension agents, animal nutrition specialists, livestock production experts, agricultural research institutions, government livestock agencies, non-governmental organisations, and researchers. It may provide useful information on farmers’ knowledge gaps and support the development of appropriate training programmes on crop residue improvement. The findings may also assist agricultural stakeholders in promoting the safe and effective utilisation of locally available crop residues as livestock feed. The study concludes that adequate knowledge of urea treatment is important for farmers to safely and effectively improve the feeding value of crop residues. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer education through practical demonstrations, workshops, farm visits, and accessible information materials on urea treatment procedures and safety precautions. Farmers should also be encouraged to follow recommended treatment procedures, observe appropriate safety measures, and seek technical guidance when preparing treated crop residues for livestock feeding.
