Assessment of Farmers’ Use of Community Agricultural Information Boards

Abstract

Community agricultural information boards are locally accessible communication channels used to display and disseminate information relevant to farmers and agricultural activities. They may provide information on improved farming practices, agricultural inputs, market opportunities, extension activities, weather conditions, training programmes, government interventions, and other agricultural services. Assessing farmers’ use of these information boards is important because their effectiveness depends on farmers’ awareness, accessibility, frequency of use, and ability to understand and apply the information provided. This study will assess farmers’ use of community agricultural information boards. It will examine the extent to which farmers access and use information displayed on community agricultural information boards and determine the types of agricultural information commonly obtained through this channel. The study will also assess the frequency of farmers’ use, perceived usefulness of the information, and factors that may encourage or limit their use of community agricultural information boards. The study will focus on community agricultural information boards, farmers’ access to information, information use, agricultural information needs, extension communication, information availability, information relevance, information timeliness, agricultural production information, market information, input information, weather information, training information, and community-based agricultural communication. Attention will be given to the location, visibility, content, language, frequency of updating, and accessibility of the information boards. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their awareness, frequency of use, types of information accessed, perceived usefulness, and challenges associated with community agricultural information boards. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, correlation analysis, and appropriate inferential statistical techniques to assess farmers’ use of the information boards. The study is expected to reveal that community agricultural information boards may be useful sources of agricultural information for farmers, particularly where they are located in accessible areas and regularly updated with relevant information. Farmers may commonly use the boards to obtain information on extension activities, farm inputs, production practices, market opportunities, training programmes, and agricultural development initiatives. However, their use may be limited by poor visibility, irregular updating, unsuitable locations, inadequate information, language barriers, and limited awareness among farmers. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, community organisations, policymakers, and researchers. It may provide useful information for improving community-based agricultural information dissemination and strengthening farmers’ access to locally available extension information. The findings may also assist extension agencies in determining the types of information that farmers require and improving the design, placement, and management of agricultural information boards. The study concludes that community agricultural information boards can provide a useful channel for disseminating agricultural information to farmers when they are properly managed and made accessible. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies and community organisations ensure that information boards are strategically located, regularly updated, clearly presented, and supplied with relevant agricultural information in languages that farmers can easily understand. Farmers should also be encouraged to make regular use of these information channels to improve their access to agricultural knowledge and services.
