Assessment of Farmers’ Use of Digital Agricultural Information Platforms
Abstract
Digital agricultural information platforms are increasingly being used to provide farmers with timely access to information needed for improved farm planning, production, marketing, and decision-making. These platforms may include mobile applications, agricultural websites, online advisory services, social media groups, digital marketplaces, and other electronic platforms that provide agricultural information. Farmers’ use of these platforms can support access to relevant information and reduce some of the limitations associated with traditional methods of agricultural information dissemination. This study will assess farmers’ use of digital agricultural information platforms. It will examine the extent to which farmers access and use digital platforms for obtaining agricultural information and determine the types of information commonly sought through these platforms. The study will also assess farmers’ frequency of use, preferred digital platforms, and purposes for accessing agricultural information through digital channels. The study will focus on digital agricultural information platforms such as mobile agricultural applications, agricultural websites, social media platforms, online advisory services, digital farmer groups, and agricultural information portals. Areas of assessment will include farmers’ use of these platforms to obtain information on crop production, livestock management, weather conditions, agricultural inputs, pest management, market prices, farm management, and agricultural financing. Farmers’ access to smartphones, internet connectivity, digital literacy, and sources of awareness about digital agricultural platforms will also be considered. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires. Descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize farmers’ levels and patterns of platform use. Correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine relationships between selected factors such as digital literacy, access to mobile devices, internet availability, and farmers’ use of digital agricultural information platforms. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of farmers’ use of digital agricultural information platforms. Farmers with access to smartphones, reliable internet services, digital skills, and agricultural extension information may demonstrate higher levels of platform use than those with limited digital access. The study may also reveal that farmers commonly use digital platforms for accessing information on weather, production practices, agricultural markets, inputs, and farm management, although challenges such as internet costs, poor connectivity, limited digital skills, and lack of awareness may restrict effective use. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, digital agriculture providers, researchers, non-governmental organizations, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for understanding farmers’ digital information needs and improving the design and delivery of agricultural information through electronic platforms. The findings may also assist extension organizations in integrating digital platforms into agricultural advisory services and developing accessible information systems that respond to farmers’ needs. The study concludes that digital agricultural information platforms can serve as important sources of agricultural information and support farmers’ access to timely knowledge for farm management and decision-making. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies promote appropriate digital information platforms through farmer training, demonstrations, and digital literacy programmes. Efforts should also be made to improve farmers’ access to affordable internet services, reliable digital platforms, and relevant agricultural information presented in simple and accessible formats.
