Assessment of Livestock Farmers’ Adoption of Improved Animal Waste Management Practices

Abstract

Improved animal waste management is an important component of sustainable livestock production because livestock farms generate manure, urine, bedding materials, and other organic wastes that require proper handling and disposal. Poor management of animal waste can contribute to unpleasant odours, environmental pollution, disease risks, and contamination of soil and water resources. Appropriate waste management practices can instead support environmental protection, improve farm sanitation, and create opportunities for the productive utilization of livestock waste. This study will assess livestock farmers’ adoption of improved animal waste management practices. The study will determine the extent to which livestock farmers adopt recommended methods of collecting, storing, treating, utilizing, and disposing of animal waste. It will also examine farmers’ knowledge of improved waste management practices and identify the major factors that may influence their adoption. The study will focus on farmers’ practices relating to regular collection of manure, proper storage of animal waste, separation of waste materials, composting, use of manure as organic fertilizer, biogas production, safe disposal of liquid waste, maintenance of clean animal housing, and prevention of waste accumulation around livestock facilities. It will also examine farmers’ sources of information, exposure to agricultural extension services, participation in training programmes, and access to facilities and materials required for improved animal waste management. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from livestock farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their adoption and knowledge of improved animal waste management practices. The collected data will be analysed using frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations to determine adoption levels, while correlation and regression analyses will be used to examine relationships between farmers’ characteristics, extension exposure, access to information, and adoption of improved waste management practices. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of adoption of improved animal waste management practices among livestock farmers. Some farmers may regularly collect and utilize animal waste as organic fertilizer, while others may continue to use traditional disposal methods. The study may also identify challenges such as inadequate waste management facilities, limited technical knowledge, labour requirements, financial constraints, insufficient extension information, and limited awareness of alternative uses of animal waste. The study will be useful to livestock farmers, agricultural extension agents, veterinary professionals, agricultural development agencies, environmental authorities, farmers’ associations, policymakers, researchers, and organisations involved in sustainable livestock production. The findings may provide useful information for developing extension programmes that promote improved animal waste management and encourage the productive utilization of livestock waste. The study concludes that adoption of improved animal waste management practices can contribute to better farm sanitation, environmental protection, and sustainable livestock production. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer education through practical demonstrations, farm visits, training programmes, and advisory materials on manure management, composting, waste treatment, and safe disposal. Livestock farmers should also be encouraged to adopt appropriate waste management practices and utilize animal waste as a valuable agricultural resource where feasible.
