Assessment of Livestock Farmers’ Knowledge of Animal Health Record-Keeping

Abstract

Animal health record-keeping is an important livestock management practice because accurate records provide useful information about the health history, treatment, vaccination, breeding, and general performance of animals. Proper health records can help livestock farmers monitor individual animals, identify recurring health problems, make informed management decisions, and communicate effectively with veterinary professionals. Assessing farmers’ knowledge of animal health record-keeping is therefore important for understanding their ability to maintain and use health information in livestock production. This study will assess livestock farmers’ knowledge of animal health record-keeping. The study will determine the level of farmers’ knowledge of the importance and procedures involved in maintaining animal health records. It will also examine farmers’ understanding of the types of health information that should be recorded and identify the major sources of information through which farmers acquire knowledge about animal health record-keeping. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of recording animal identification, vaccination history, disease occurrence, symptoms, diagnosis, medication, treatment dates, veterinary visits, deworming, mortality, reproductive health, and other relevant health information. It will also examine farmers’ knowledge of maintaining records in notebooks, registers, spreadsheets, mobile applications, or other appropriate formats, as well as their ability to retrieve and use recorded information for livestock management. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from livestock farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their knowledge of animal health record-keeping. The collected data will be analysed using frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations to determine farmers’ knowledge levels, while correlation and regression analyses will be used to examine relationships between farmers’ characteristics, access to veterinary services, extension contact, sources of information, and knowledge of animal health record-keeping. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of knowledge of animal health record-keeping among livestock farmers. Some farmers may demonstrate adequate knowledge of recording vaccination, treatment, disease, and veterinary information, while others may have limited understanding of systematic record-keeping procedures. The study may also identify challenges such as inadequate training, limited extension contact, low awareness of the benefits of health records, poor access to veterinary services, and limited knowledge of digital record-keeping tools. The study will be useful to livestock farmers, agricultural extension agents, veterinarians, livestock development agencies, farmers’ associations, policymakers, researchers, and organisations involved in animal health and livestock production. The findings may provide useful information for developing training programmes that improve farmers’ understanding of animal health documentation and encourage more systematic management of livestock health information. The study concludes that adequate knowledge of animal health record-keeping is important for effective livestock health management and informed farm decision-making. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension and veterinary agencies strengthen farmer education through practical training, demonstrations, farm visits, and accessible record-keeping materials. Livestock farmers should also be encouraged to maintain accurate and regularly updated health records and use the information to support timely veterinary care and improved livestock management.
