Effect of Agricultural Advisory Services on Farmers’ Adoption of Improved Housing Practices for Livestock
Abstract
Improved livestock housing practices are important for maintaining animal health, welfare, productivity, and efficient farm management. Appropriate housing provides livestock with adequate protection from harsh weather conditions, reduces exposure to disease and parasites, improves hygiene, and creates a suitable environment for feeding, breeding, and general animal care. However, some farmers may continue to use inadequate housing structures due to limited access to technical information and knowledge of recommended housing practices. Agricultural advisory services can provide farmers with relevant information, practical guidance, and technical support for improving livestock housing. This study will examine the effect of agricultural advisory services on farmers’ adoption of improved housing practices for livestock. The study will assess the extent to which advisory services influence farmers’ decisions to adopt recommended livestock housing practices. It will also examine the relationship between farmers’ access to advisory information and their adoption of appropriate housing structures and management practices. The study will focus on advisory visits, technical information, farm demonstrations, training programmes, and guidance provided to farmers on livestock housing. Improved housing practices to be assessed will include adequate ventilation, appropriate stocking density, proper drainage, suitable roofing, sufficient floor space, clean water facilities, feeding areas, waste disposal systems, sanitation, protection from extreme weather conditions, and appropriate housing arrangements for different livestock species. Farmers’ adoption of these practices will be assessed to determine the extent of their application. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from livestock farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on access to agricultural advisory services and adoption of improved livestock housing practices. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the relationship between agricultural advisory services and farmers’ adoption of improved housing practices. The study is expected to reveal that access to agricultural advisory services has a positive effect on farmers’ adoption of improved livestock housing practices. Farmers who receive regular and relevant advisory information may be more likely to adopt appropriate ventilation, drainage, sanitation, stocking density, roofing, flooring, and waste management practices. The study may also identify challenges limiting adoption, including inadequate technical information, financial constraints, availability of suitable materials, and limited access to advisory support. The study will be useful to livestock farmers, agricultural extension agents, livestock development agencies, government institutions, non-governmental organisations, policymakers, and researchers. The findings may assist agricultural agencies in strengthening advisory programmes that address farmers’ livestock housing needs. It may also provide useful information for developing practical demonstrations and training programmes that promote affordable and sustainable housing improvements for livestock production. The study concludes that agricultural advisory services are important for promoting farmers’ adoption of improved livestock housing practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen regular farm visits, practical demonstrations, technical training, and advisory support on livestock housing. Advisory programmes should provide farmers with practical information on affordable housing designs, ventilation, sanitation, drainage, space requirements, waste management, and animal welfare to encourage improved housing practices and sustainable livestock production.
