Effect of Agricultural Advisory Services on Farmers’ Adoption of Weed Monitoring Practices

Abstract

The study will examine the effect of agricultural advisory services on farmers’ adoption of weed monitoring practices. Weed monitoring is an important component of effective weed management because it enables farmers to identify weed presence, distribution, density, and changes in weed populations before they become difficult to control. Regular monitoring can support timely decision-making, improve the effectiveness of weed control measures, and reduce unnecessary use of agricultural inputs. The study will focus on farmers’ adoption of weed monitoring practices, including regular field inspection, identification of weed species, observation of weed density, monitoring of weed growth stages, recording of weed occurrence, and identification of areas with increasing weed populations. It will also examine the agricultural advisory services available to farmers and the extent to which technical advice, farm visits, demonstrations, and information provided by extension personnel influence farmers’ adoption of recommended weed monitoring practices. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers in the selected study area, from whom a representative sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on farmers’ exposure to agricultural advisory services and their adoption of weed monitoring practices. The data collected will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, standard deviation, and an appropriate inferential statistical technique. The study is expected to reveal the level of farmers’ exposure to agricultural advisory services and the extent of their adoption of weed monitoring practices. It is also expected to identify the major weed monitoring activities adopted by farmers and areas where inadequate technical information or limited advisory support may affect regular and effective monitoring. The findings will be useful to agricultural extension officers, agricultural development agencies, farmers’ organizations, and policymakers by providing information on the role of advisory services in promoting improved weed monitoring practices. The findings may also assist extension personnel in developing practical training programmes that emphasize field observation, weed identification, monitoring schedules, and timely weed management decisions. The study will conclude that agricultural advisory services can provide farmers with relevant knowledge and technical guidance needed to improve weed monitoring practices. It will recommend regular advisory visits, field demonstrations, practical training, and continuous provision of weed management information to encourage farmers’ adoption of effective weed monitoring practices.
