Effect of Agricultural Advisory Services on Farmers’ Knowledge of Beneficial Insects

Abstract

Beneficial insects are important components of agricultural ecosystems because they contribute to natural pest control, pollination, decomposition, and overall ecological balance. Insects such as ladybirds, lacewings, parasitic wasps, bees, and other pollinators can support crop production by reducing harmful pest populations and improving pollination. Farmers’ knowledge of beneficial insects is therefore important for recognizing, conserving, and managing these organisms within agricultural systems. Agricultural advisory services can provide farmers with relevant information on the identification and importance of beneficial insects. This study will examine the effect of agricultural advisory services on farmers’ knowledge of beneficial insects. It will assess farmers’ access to agricultural advisory services and determine how exposure to advisory information influences their knowledge of beneficial insects and their roles in agricultural production. The study will also identify areas of knowledge where farmers may require additional technical education and support. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of common beneficial insects, their physical characteristics, roles in natural pest control, pollination activities, habitat requirements, feeding behaviour, and methods of conserving beneficial insect populations. Attention will also be given to advisory activities such as farm visits, farmer training, field demonstrations, group meetings, pest management consultations, and distribution of agricultural information. These services may improve farmers’ ability to distinguish beneficial insects from harmful pests and understand their contribution to crop production. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires, insect identification exercises, and knowledge assessment instruments. Descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize farmers’ knowledge levels. Knowledge scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis will also be used to determine the relationship between agricultural advisory services and farmers’ knowledge of beneficial insects. The study is expected to reveal that farmers with greater exposure to agricultural advisory services may demonstrate higher levels of knowledge of beneficial insects. Advisory services may improve farmers’ ability to identify beneficial insects and understand their roles in biological pest control and pollination. However, limited advisory contact, inadequate practical demonstrations, widespread use of chemical pesticides, poor access to technical information, and difficulties in distinguishing beneficial insects from harmful species may contribute to knowledge gaps among farmers. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, entomologists, crop protection specialists, agricultural development agencies, researchers, government institutions, and non-governmental organizations. It may provide useful information on the contribution of agricultural advisory services to farmers’ knowledge of beneficial insects and identify areas requiring additional technical support. The findings may also assist agricultural agencies in developing training programmes that promote conservation of beneficial insects and environmentally responsible pest management. The study concludes that agricultural advisory services can play an important role in improving farmers’ knowledge of beneficial insects. It is therefore recommended that extension agencies strengthen farmer education through practical insect identification exercises, field demonstrations, integrated pest management training, and regular advisory contact. Farmers should also be encouraged to adopt pest management practices that conserve beneficial insect populations and support natural pest control, pollination, and sustainable agricultural production.
