Effect of Agricultural Advisory Services on Farmers’ Knowledge of Cocoa Pod Management
Abstract
Cocoa is an important tree crop that contributes to farmers’ income, employment, household livelihoods, and agricultural development. Effective cocoa pod management is essential for maintaining healthy cocoa trees, protecting developing pods, reducing production losses, and improving the quality and quantity of harvested cocoa. However, inadequate knowledge of appropriate pod management practices may expose farmers to avoidable losses and poor production outcomes. Agricultural advisory services can provide farmers with relevant technical information and practical guidance needed to improve their knowledge of cocoa pod management. This study will examine the effect of agricultural advisory services on farmers’ knowledge of cocoa pod management. It will assess farmers’ access to agricultural advisory services and determine their level of knowledge of recommended cocoa pod management practices. The study will also examine the relationship between farmers’ exposure to advisory services and their knowledge of appropriate cocoa pod management techniques. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of pod development and monitoring, identification and removal of diseased pods, management of damaged and abnormal pods, appropriate pod sanitation, removal of infected pod materials, prevention of pod-to-pod disease spread, safe use of recommended crop protection measures, harvesting of mature pods, and proper handling of harvested pods. It will also consider farmers’ frequency of advisory contact, participation in training programmes, field demonstrations, farm visits, and access to technical information on cocoa pod management. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from cocoa farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their access to agricultural advisory services and knowledge of cocoa pod management practices. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, knowledge-level assessment, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the effect of agricultural advisory services on farmers’ knowledge of cocoa pod management. The study is expected to reveal that farmers who receive regular and relevant agricultural advisory services may demonstrate higher levels of knowledge of recommended cocoa pod management practices. Advisory visits, practical demonstrations, training, and timely technical information may improve farmers’ understanding of pod monitoring, sanitation, disease management, harvesting, and proper handling practices. The study may also identify challenges such as inadequate advisory coverage, limited access to extension personnel, insufficient practical training, and difficulties in accessing appropriate cocoa production information. The study will be useful to cocoa farmers, agricultural extension agents, cocoa development organisations, research institutions, policymakers, non-governmental organisations, farmer associations, and other stakeholders involved in cocoa production. It may provide useful information for identifying farmers’ knowledge gaps and improving the delivery of advisory services related to cocoa pod management. The findings may also assist agricultural organisations in developing practical training and demonstration programmes that address farmers’ specific cocoa production needs. The study concludes that agricultural advisory services are important for improving farmers’ knowledge of cocoa pod management practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farm visits, practical demonstrations, farmer training, and dissemination of timely technical information on cocoa pod management. Farmers should also be encouraged to participate in advisory programmes and adopt appropriate pod management practices to improve cocoa production, reduce avoidable losses, and enhance farm productivity.
