Effect of Agricultural Advisory Services on Farmers’ Knowledge of Family Farm Succession

Abstract

Family farm succession involves the process through which ownership, management responsibilities, knowledge, and other farm resources are transferred from one generation to another. Effective succession planning is important for maintaining farm continuity, preserving agricultural assets, and ensuring the transfer of farming skills and responsibilities within farming families. Agricultural advisory services can provide farmers with information, guidance, and planning support that may improve their understanding of family farm succession and its importance for the long-term sustainability of agricultural enterprises. This study will examine the effect of agricultural advisory services on farmers’ knowledge of family farm succession. It will assess farmers’ access to agricultural advisory services and determine their level of knowledge regarding succession planning, intergenerational transfer of farm resources, transfer of farm management responsibilities, and preparation of younger family members for future farm management. The study will also examine the relationship between advisory service exposure and farmers’ knowledge of family farm succession. The study will focus on advisory visits, succession planning information, farm management training, financial management guidance, family farm business education, intergenerational knowledge transfer, and information on farm ownership and management transition. It will also examine farmers’ knowledge of identifying potential successors, preparing younger family members, transferring farming skills, documenting farm assets, planning management responsibilities, and maintaining continuity of family farming activities. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to agricultural advisory services and knowledge of family farm succession. Descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while knowledge indices, correlation analysis, and regression analysis will be used to determine the relationship between agricultural advisory services and farmers’ knowledge of family farm succession. The study is expected to reveal that farmers with greater access to agricultural advisory services may demonstrate higher levels of knowledge of family farm succession. Regular advisory contact, farm management training, financial guidance, and succession-related information may improve farmers’ understanding of the need for early planning and intergenerational preparation. However, limited advisory coverage, inadequate succession information, family disagreements, reluctance to discuss future farm ownership, and limited awareness of formal succession planning may constrain farmers’ knowledge. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural advisers, farming families, government agricultural agencies, financial institutions, researchers, non-governmental organisations, and policymakers. It may provide useful information on the role of advisory services in improving farmers’ understanding of succession planning and intergenerational farm management. The findings may also assist agricultural advisory organisations in developing programmes that address the long-term continuity and sustainability of family-owned farms. The study concludes that agricultural advisory services can play an important role in improving farmers’ knowledge of family farm succession by providing relevant information, management guidance, and planning support. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension and advisory agencies incorporate family farm succession education into farm management programmes through training, advisory visits, family-oriented workshops, financial planning education, and intergenerational knowledge-sharing activities to promote continuity of family farming enterprises.
