Effect of Agricultural Advisory Services on Farmers’ Knowledge of Farm-Gate Marketing
Abstract
Farm-gate marketing is a form of agricultural marketing in which farmers sell their agricultural produce directly from their farms or farm premises to traders, consumers, processors, or other buyers. This marketing approach can reduce the need to transport produce to distant markets and provide farmers with convenient opportunities to dispose of harvested products. Effective farm-gate marketing, however, requires adequate knowledge of pricing, buyer identification, produce quality, negotiation, weighing, packaging, and payment arrangements. Agricultural advisory services can provide farmers with relevant information and practical guidance that may improve their understanding of farm-gate marketing practices. This study will examine the effect of agricultural advisory services on farmers’ knowledge of farm-gate marketing. It will assess farmers’ exposure to agricultural advisory services and determine how such services influence their knowledge of farm-gate marketing practices. The study will also examine farmers’ understanding of farm-gate marketing procedures, sources of marketing information, and the contribution of advisory services to their ability to manage direct sales from the farm. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of farm-gate pricing, buyer identification, produce grading, quality assessment, weighing, packaging, price negotiation, payment arrangements, record keeping, and transaction management. It will also examine farmers’ knowledge of identifying reliable buyers, comparing offers, determining appropriate selling periods, and maintaining acceptable produce quality before sale. The study will further consider farmers’ access to agricultural advisory services, frequency of advisory contact, market information, farmer organisations, and communication channels used to obtain farm-gate marketing information. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to agricultural advisory services and their level of knowledge of farm-gate marketing practices. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations, while correlation and regression analysis may be used to examine the relationship between agricultural advisory services and farmers’ knowledge of farm-gate marketing. The study is expected to reveal that farmers with greater exposure to agricultural advisory services may demonstrate higher levels of knowledge of farm-gate marketing practices. Advisory services may improve farmers’ understanding of pricing, buyer selection, quality requirements, negotiation, weighing, packaging, payment procedures, and transaction records. The study may also identify knowledge gaps relating to price determination, buyer reliability, contractual arrangements, and market information. Limited advisory contact, inadequate market information, weak bargaining skills, and limited access to reliable buyers may be identified as constraints affecting farmers’ knowledge and participation in farm-gate marketing. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural marketing organisations, commodity traders, farmer cooperatives, processors, government agencies, policymakers, and researchers. The findings may provide useful information on the contribution of agricultural advisory services to farmers’ understanding of farm-gate marketing and direct produce sales. Extension organisations may use the findings to strengthen market-oriented advisory programmes, while farmer organisations and agricultural marketing agencies may use the information to improve farmers’ access to market information and reliable buyers. The study concludes that agricultural advisory services can contribute to improving farmers’ knowledge of farm-gate marketing by providing relevant market information, practical guidance, and continuous advisory support. It is therefore recommended that extension agencies strengthen advisory programmes on farm-gate marketing and provide practical education on pricing, produce quality, buyer identification, negotiation, weighing, packaging, payment arrangements, and record keeping. Relevant stakeholders should also improve farmers’ access to reliable market information and buyer networks to support informed and effective farm-gate marketing practices.
