Effect of Agricultural Advisory Services on Farmers’ Knowledge of Farmland Rehabilitation Practices

Abstract

Farmland rehabilitation is an important agricultural land management practice aimed at restoring the productivity and functional condition of degraded or exhausted farmland. Continuous cultivation, erosion, nutrient depletion, poor soil management, and other forms of land degradation can reduce soil quality and agricultural productivity. Agricultural advisory services can provide farmers with relevant information and technical guidance on appropriate practices for restoring degraded farmland and improving its productive capacity. This study will examine the effect of agricultural advisory services on farmers’ knowledge of farmland rehabilitation practices. The study will assess farmers’ level of knowledge of farmland rehabilitation and determine the extent to which exposure to agricultural advisory services contributes to improved understanding of rehabilitation practices. It will also examine the forms and frequency of advisory support received by farmers and identify areas where additional information is required. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of soil fertility restoration, application of organic manure and compost, erosion control, cover cropping, crop rotation, fallowing, mulching, soil moisture conservation, restoration of degraded areas, and appropriate management of damaged farmland. It will also consider farmers’ knowledge of identifying signs of land degradation, selecting suitable rehabilitation practices, implementing rehabilitation measures, and maintaining rehabilitated farmland. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their exposure to agricultural advisory services and their knowledge of farmland rehabilitation practices. The collected data will be analysed using frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations to determine farmers’ knowledge levels, while correlation and regression analyses will be used to examine the relationship between advisory services and farmers’ knowledge of farmland rehabilitation. The study is expected to reveal variations in farmers’ knowledge of farmland rehabilitation practices based on their exposure to agricultural advisory services. Farmers who receive regular farm visits, practical demonstrations, training, and advisory information may demonstrate better knowledge of soil restoration, erosion control, fertility improvement, and other rehabilitation measures. The study may also identify knowledge gaps associated with limited advisory contact, inadequate access to rehabilitation materials, financial constraints, labour requirements, and insufficient technical information. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, soil conservation authorities, farmers’ associations, environmental organisations, policymakers, and researchers. The findings may provide useful information for strengthening advisory programmes that promote farmland rehabilitation and support sustainable agricultural land management. The study concludes that agricultural advisory services can contribute to improving farmers’ knowledge of farmland rehabilitation practices and supporting the restoration of degraded agricultural land. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension and land management agencies strengthen advisory services through practical demonstrations, farm visits, training programmes, and accessible educational materials on farmland rehabilitation. Farmers should also be encouraged to identify early signs of land degradation and apply appropriate rehabilitation practices to restore soil productivity and promote sustainable agricultural production.
