Effect of Agricultural Advisory Services on Farmers’ Knowledge of Pasture Management

Abstract

Pasture management is an important component of livestock production because the availability, quality, and proper utilisation of pasture directly influence animal nutrition, health, productivity, and farm profitability. Effective pasture management involves appropriate selection of pasture species, establishment, grazing management, weed control, soil fertility management, pasture conservation, and proper utilisation of available forage resources. Agricultural advisory services can provide livestock farmers with relevant information and practical guidance needed to improve their knowledge and management of pasture resources. This study will examine the effect of agricultural advisory services on farmers’ knowledge of pasture management. The study will assess farmers’ exposure to agricultural advisory services and determine their level of knowledge regarding appropriate pasture establishment, maintenance, utilisation, and conservation practices. It will also identify areas of pasture management where farmers may require additional advisory support. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of pasture species selection, pasture establishment, land preparation, seeding methods, pasture maintenance, weed management, soil fertility, grazing intensity, rotational grazing, pasture utilisation, forage conservation, pasture regeneration, and prevention of overgrazing. It will also examine advisory activities such as farm visits, livestock training, field demonstrations, farmer meetings, workshops, and distribution of agricultural information materials in improving farmers’ knowledge of pasture management. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected livestock farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their exposure to agricultural advisory services and their knowledge of pasture management practices. Data will be analysed using frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations, while correlation and regression analysis may be used to determine the relationship between exposure to advisory services and farmers’ knowledge levels. The study is expected to reveal that farmers with greater exposure to agricultural advisory services may demonstrate higher knowledge of appropriate pasture management practices. Advisory services are expected to improve farmers’ understanding of pasture establishment, grazing management, forage conservation, weed control, and maintenance practices. However, limited advisory contact, inadequate access to improved pasture planting materials, insufficient technical information, shortage of extension personnel, and limited access to pasture management resources may constrain farmers’ knowledge development. The study will be useful to livestock farmers, agricultural extension agents, livestock production specialists, pasture agronomists, agricultural research institutions, government agricultural agencies, livestock development organisations, non-governmental organisations, and researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening advisory programmes that promote sustainable pasture management and improved livestock production. The findings may also assist stakeholders in developing practical training materials and field demonstrations that address farmers’ pasture management information needs. The study concludes that agricultural advisory services can contribute to improved farmers’ knowledge of pasture management by providing relevant information, technical guidance, and practical learning opportunities. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen advisory services through regular farm visits, pasture demonstrations, farmer training, field days, and accessible educational materials. Farmers should also be encouraged to adopt appropriate pasture establishment, grazing, maintenance, conservation, and utilisation practices to improve forage availability and support sustainable livestock production.
