Effect of Agricultural Advisory Services on Farmers’ Perception of Agricultural Biotechnology

Abstract

Agricultural biotechnology comprises a range of scientific techniques used to improve crops, livestock, and other agricultural resources through the application of biological processes and technologies. In crop production, biotechnology can contribute to the development of improved varieties with characteristics such as enhanced yield potential, pest and disease resistance, improved nutritional quality, and tolerance to environmental stresses. Farmers’ perceptions of agricultural biotechnology may influence their understanding, acceptance, and willingness to consider biotechnology-related agricultural technologies. Agricultural advisory services can provide farmers with accurate and practical information that may shape their perceptions of biotechnology. This study will examine the effect of agricultural advisory services on farmers’ perception of agricultural biotechnology. The study will assess farmers’ exposure to agricultural advisory services and determine how such services influence their perception and understanding of agricultural biotechnology. It will also examine farmers’ views regarding the potential benefits, limitations, safety, usefulness, and application of biotechnology in agricultural production. The study will focus on farmers’ perceptions of biotechnology applications in crop production, genetically improved crop varieties, tissue culture technology, improved planting materials, pest and disease resistance, yield improvement, crop quality, environmental considerations, and food production. It will also examine advisory activities such as farm visits, training programmes, field demonstrations, farmer meetings, workshops, and agricultural information materials as sources of information that may influence farmers’ perceptions of agricultural biotechnology. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires designed to measure their exposure to agricultural advisory services and their perceptions of agricultural biotechnology. Data will be analysed using frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations, while correlation and regression analysis may be used to determine the relationship between exposure to advisory services and farmers’ perception of agricultural biotechnology. The study is expected to reveal that farmers with greater exposure to agricultural advisory services may demonstrate more informed perceptions of agricultural biotechnology. Advisory services are expected to improve farmers’ understanding of biotechnology applications, potential agricultural benefits, and appropriate management requirements. However, limited access to reliable information, inadequate advisory contact, misconceptions, lack of practical demonstrations, and concerns about biotechnology applications may influence farmers’ perceptions and create uncertainty about its use. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural biotechnologists, plant breeders, research institutions, government agricultural agencies, seed producers, non-governmental organisations, policymakers, and researchers. It may provide useful information for improving agricultural communication and advisory programmes related to biotechnology. The findings may also assist stakeholders in developing clear, evidence-based, and farmer-friendly educational materials and training programmes that address farmers’ questions and information needs concerning agricultural biotechnology. The study concludes that agricultural advisory services can play an important role in improving farmers’ understanding and perceptions of agricultural biotechnology by providing reliable information and opportunities for practical learning. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen advisory services through regular training, field demonstrations, workshops, farm visits, and accessible educational materials on agricultural biotechnology. Farmers should also be encouraged to obtain information from credible agricultural and scientific sources to support informed understanding and decision-making regarding biotechnology-related agricultural technologies.
