Effect of Agricultural Advisory Services on Livestock Farmers’ Knowledge of Mineral Supplementation
Abstract
Mineral supplementation is an important component of livestock nutrition because minerals are required for proper growth, reproduction, bone development, immunity, and overall animal health. Inadequate or imbalanced mineral intake can negatively affect livestock productivity and may contribute to poor growth, reproductive challenges, and reduced production performance. Agricultural advisory services can provide livestock farmers with relevant information and technical guidance on the importance, sources, selection, and appropriate use of mineral supplements. This study will examine the effect of agricultural advisory services on livestock farmers’ knowledge of mineral supplementation. It will assess farmers’ exposure to agricultural advisory services and determine the extent to which such services influence their knowledge of appropriate mineral supplementation practices. The study will also examine the sources of mineral nutrition information available to livestock farmers and identify challenges affecting their access to advisory support. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of essential minerals, mineral sources, mineral deficiency symptoms, mineral requirements, appropriate supplementation methods, dosage, mineral blocks, mineral mixtures, salt supplementation, feed-based mineral supplementation, water supplementation, storage and handling of mineral products, and the importance of balanced mineral nutrition. It will also consider farmers’ access to extension visits, training, demonstrations, advisory materials, and livestock nutrition specialists. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from livestock farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their exposure to agricultural advisory services and their knowledge of mineral supplementation. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, knowledge-level assessment, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the relationship between agricultural advisory services and farmers’ knowledge of mineral supplementation. The study is expected to reveal that livestock farmers with greater exposure to agricultural advisory services may demonstrate higher levels of knowledge of mineral supplementation. Advisory services may improve farmers’ understanding of mineral requirements, deficiency symptoms, appropriate supplementation methods, and the proper use of mineral products. However, inadequate access to advisory services, limited technical information, cost of mineral supplements, poor availability of quality products, and insufficient training may remain challenges affecting farmers’ knowledge. The study will be useful to livestock farmers, agricultural extension agents, livestock nutrition specialists, farmer organisations, agricultural development agencies, policymakers, non-governmental organisations, and researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening livestock advisory programmes and improving farmers’ knowledge of mineral nutrition. The findings may also support efforts to improve animal health, reproductive performance, growth, productivity, and the overall efficiency of livestock production. The study concludes that agricultural advisory services are important for improving livestock farmers’ knowledge of mineral supplementation and supporting better livestock nutrition management. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen training, farm visits, practical demonstrations, and advisory materials on mineral supplementation. Livestock farmers should also be encouraged to make greater use of available advisory services and adopt appropriate mineral supplementation practices based on the nutritional needs of their animals.
