Effect of Agricultural Extension Education on Farmers’ Adoption of Fodder Bank Establishment

Abstract

Fodder bank establishment is an important livestock management practice that involves the development and maintenance of designated areas for the production, conservation, and availability of feed resources for livestock. Fodder banks can help farmers address seasonal feed shortages, improve livestock nutrition, reduce dependence on naturally available grazing resources, and support more consistent livestock production. However, farmers may face challenges in establishing and managing fodder banks due to limited technical knowledge and inadequate access to relevant agricultural information. Agricultural extension education can provide farmers with the knowledge and practical skills required to adopt appropriate fodder bank establishment practices. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension education on farmers’ adoption of fodder bank establishment. The study will assess farmers’ exposure to extension education, determine their knowledge of fodder bank establishment techniques, and examine the extent to which extension education influences their adoption of recommended practices. It will also assess the frequency of extension contact and the types of technical information provided to livestock farmers on fodder production and conservation. The study will focus on agricultural extension education, fodder bank establishment, farmers’ knowledge, extension contact, site selection, fodder species selection, land preparation, planting methods, fodder management, harvesting, conservation, storage, feed availability, and adoption of recommended fodder bank practices. Information will be obtained from livestock farmers to determine their exposure to extension education and the extent to which the knowledge acquired is applied in establishing and managing fodder banks. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected livestock farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate field observation methods. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between agricultural extension education and farmers’ adoption of fodder bank establishment practices. The study is expected to reveal that agricultural extension education may improve farmers’ knowledge and adoption of fodder bank establishment practices. Farmers who receive regular extension training, practical demonstrations, and technical advisory services may demonstrate greater adoption of appropriate site selection, fodder species selection, land preparation, planting, management, harvesting, conservation, and storage practices. The study may also indicate that regular extension contact and practical training contribute to improved availability of quality fodder during periods of feed scarcity. The study will be useful to livestock farmers, agricultural extension agents, livestock development agencies, agricultural cooperatives, researchers, non-governmental organizations, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes aimed at promoting fodder bank establishment and improving livestock feed management. The findings may also assist extension personnel in developing practical training programmes that address farmers’ technical needs in fodder production, conservation, and storage. The study concludes that agricultural extension education is an important source of technical knowledge and practical support for improving farmers’ adoption of fodder bank establishment practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen regular farmer training, practical demonstrations, farm visits, and follow-up advisory services on fodder bank development and management. Extension programmes should emphasize appropriate site selection, suitable fodder species, proper establishment, harvesting, conservation, and storage practices to support sustainable livestock production and improved feed availability.
