Effect of Agricultural Extension Education on Farmers’ Adoption of Habitat-Based Pest Management

Abstract

Habitat-based pest management involves the deliberate management of farm habitats and surrounding vegetation to create conditions that support beneficial organisms and reduce the occurrence and impact of agricultural pests. Practices such as maintaining flowering plants, conserving natural vegetation, establishing field margins, and providing suitable habitats for beneficial insects can contribute to sustainable pest management and reduce excessive dependence on chemical control methods. Agricultural extension education provides farmers with knowledge, skills, and practical guidance that may influence their understanding and adoption of habitat-based pest management practices. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension education on farmers’ adoption of habitat-based pest management. It will assess the extent to which farmers’ exposure to extension education influences their knowledge and application of habitat-based pest management practices. The study will also determine farmers’ level of participation in extension training, demonstrations, field visits, and advisory activities and examine their relationship with the adoption of recommended habitat management practices. The study will focus on agricultural extension education, farmers’ knowledge, extension contact, habitat-based pest management, beneficial insects, natural pest control, flowering plants, field margins, vegetation management, biodiversity conservation, pest regulation, and sustainable crop protection. Attention will be given to farmers’ understanding of how suitable farm habitats can provide shelter and food for beneficial organisms, support natural pest control, and contribute to effective management of pest populations. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to agricultural extension education, knowledge of habitat-based pest management, and adoption of relevant practices. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the relationship between extension education and farmers’ adoption of habitat-based pest management practices. The study is expected to reveal that farmers who receive regular and relevant extension education may demonstrate greater knowledge and adoption of habitat-based pest management practices. Extension training, demonstrations, and farm advisory services may improve farmers’ understanding of beneficial insects, habitat conservation, field margin management, and other ecological approaches to pest regulation. However, adoption may vary according to farmers’ access to extension services, availability of suitable planting materials, farm size, labour requirements, and perceptions of the effectiveness of habitat-based pest management. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, crop protection specialists, agricultural development agencies, environmental organisations, policymakers, and researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes that promote environmentally sustainable pest management. The findings may also assist extension agencies in developing practical training and demonstration activities that encourage farmers to integrate habitat management with other recommended crop protection practices. The study concludes that agricultural extension education can play an important role in improving farmers’ knowledge and adoption of habitat-based pest management practices. It is therefore recommended that extension agencies strengthen farmer training, field demonstrations, and advisory services on habitat conservation, beneficial insect management, flowering plant establishment, and field margin practices. Farmers should also be encouraged to adopt suitable habitat-based pest management practices as part of sustainable and environmentally responsible agricultural production.
