Effect of Agricultural Extension Education on Farmers’ Adoption of On-Farm Innovation Documentation

Abstract

On-farm innovation documentation refers to the systematic recording of new ideas, techniques, practices, adaptations, and solutions developed or tested by farmers during agricultural production. Such documentation can help preserve farmers’ experiences, support knowledge sharing, improve farm decision-making, and provide useful information for agricultural extension and research activities. Agricultural extension education can provide farmers with the knowledge and skills required to recognize, record, organize, and utilize information about innovations developed on their farms. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension education on farmers’ adoption of on-farm innovation documentation. The study will assess farmers’ exposure to extension education on documentation practices and determine how such education influences their willingness and ability to document farm-based innovations. It will also examine the extent to which farmers apply documentation practices in recording agricultural innovations developed or tested during farm activities. The study will focus on agricultural extension education, farmers’ knowledge of innovation documentation, documentation skills, adoption of record-keeping practices, recording of farm innovations, preservation of indigenous agricultural knowledge, information sharing, and utilization of documented farm experiences. It will consider different forms of documentation, including written records, photographs, mobile-based records, farm notebooks, and other appropriate documentation methods that can be used by farmers. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers through structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to agricultural extension education, knowledge of documentation practices, skills, and adoption of on-farm innovation documentation. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the relationship between extension education and farmers’ adoption of innovation documentation practices. The study is expected to reveal that agricultural extension education may improve farmers’ knowledge and practical skills in documenting on-farm innovations. Farmers who receive relevant extension education may demonstrate greater awareness of the importance of keeping records of new practices, locally developed techniques, production experiences, and farm-level solutions. The study may also reveal that inadequate documentation skills, limited access to appropriate recording tools, and insufficient extension support can constrain farmers’ adoption of innovation documentation practices. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural research institutions, cooperative organizations, agricultural development agencies, policymakers, and rural development practitioners. It may provide useful information on how extension education can support the systematic documentation and preservation of farmer-generated innovations. The findings may also assist extension personnel in developing practical educational programmes that encourage farmers to document and share successful farm innovations for wider agricultural learning and development. The study concludes that agricultural extension education is an important consideration in promoting farmers’ adoption of on-farm innovation documentation because appropriate education can improve farmers’ knowledge, skills, and awareness of documentation practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen education on simple and accessible documentation methods, provide practical demonstrations on innovation recording, and encourage farmers to maintain accurate records of successful farm innovations for future use, knowledge sharing, and agricultural development.
