Effect of Agricultural Extension on Farmers’ Access to Multilingual Agricultural Information

Abstract

Agricultural information is essential for enabling farmers to make informed decisions about production, resource management, marketing, and other farm-related activities. However, differences in language and literacy can affect farmers’ ability to access and understand agricultural information provided through conventional extension channels. The use of multiple local languages in agricultural extension communication can make advisory information more accessible and understandable to farmers, particularly those in rural communities who may have limited access to agricultural information presented in formal or unfamiliar languages. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ access to multilingual agricultural information. Specifically, the study will assess farmers’ access to agricultural extension services, determine the availability of agricultural information in different languages, examine farmers’ frequency of receiving multilingual agricultural information, and assess the extent to which agricultural extension services improve farmers’ access to information presented in languages they understand. The study will focus on agricultural extension contact, availability of multilingual information, language accessibility, farmers’ preferred languages, frequency of receiving agricultural information, understanding of extension messages, and access to information on crop production, livestock management, pest control, improved inputs, climate information, post-harvest practices, and agricultural marketing. It will also examine the communication channels used by extension agents to provide agricultural information in multiple languages, including face-to-face communication, radio, mobile platforms, printed materials, and community-based programmes. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their access to extension services and multilingual agricultural information. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation, as well as appropriate inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ access to multilingual agricultural information. The study is expected to reveal that farmers with greater access to agricultural extension services may have better access to agricultural information provided in multiple languages. The findings may also indicate that the availability of information in farmers’ preferred languages improves accessibility, understanding, recall, and use of agricultural recommendations. Differences may be observed based on the frequency of extension contact, communication channels available to farmers, and the relevance of information provided in local languages. The study will be useful to agricultural extension agents, farmers, agricultural development agencies, government institutions, non-governmental organisations, agricultural broadcasters, and researchers. It may provide useful information for improving agricultural communication strategies and ensuring that extension messages reach farmers in languages they can understand. The findings may also assist extension organisations in developing multilingual communication materials and strengthening inclusive agricultural information delivery. The study concludes that agricultural extension services can improve farmers’ access to agricultural information by supporting the provision of advisory messages in multiple languages. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension organisations strengthen multilingual communication, train extension agents in effective local-language communication, develop agricultural information materials in commonly used languages, and use appropriate communication channels to improve farmers’ access to understandable and relevant agricultural information.
