Effect of Agricultural Extension on Farmers’ Adoption of Biochar Application Practices

Abstract

Biochar application is an agricultural soil management practice that involves incorporating stable carbon-rich material produced from biomass into the soil. It can improve soil structure, enhance moisture retention, support nutrient availability, and contribute to the efficient utilization of agricultural residues. Agricultural extension services can provide farmers with information and practical guidance on the production, handling, application, and management of biochar for improved soil productivity and sustainable farming. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ adoption of biochar application practices. The study will assess farmers’ access to agricultural extension services, determine their level of awareness and adoption of biochar application practices, and examine the influence of extension information and training on farmers’ decisions to use biochar. It will also identify challenges that may limit farmers’ adoption and effective use of biochar in agricultural production. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of biochar production from suitable agricultural residues, preparation and storage, application methods, application rates, timing, incorporation into soil, and safe handling practices. It will also examine farmers’ adoption of biochar application for improving soil fertility, moisture retention, nutrient management, and crop production. Extension visits, farmer training, demonstrations, advisory meetings, and other sources of agricultural information will also be considered. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on extension contact, knowledge, awareness, and adoption of biochar application practices. The data will be analysed using frequencies, percentages, means, standard deviations, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the relationship between agricultural extension services and farmers’ adoption of biochar application practices. The study is expected to reveal that farmers with greater access to agricultural extension services may demonstrate higher levels of knowledge and adoption of biochar application practices. Extension training and practical demonstrations may improve farmers’ understanding of appropriate biochar preparation, application rates, incorporation methods, and potential benefits. However, limited technical knowledge, inadequate access to suitable production materials, labour requirements, production costs, and limited extension coverage may constrain adoption. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, soil fertility specialists, agricultural development agencies, environmental organisations, farmers’ associations, policymakers, and agricultural researchers. The findings may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes that promote biochar application, agricultural residue utilization, sustainable soil management, and improved farm resource efficiency. The study concludes that agricultural extension can contribute to improving farmers’ adoption of appropriate biochar application practices. It is therefore recommended that extension agencies strengthen practical training, field demonstrations, farm visits, and farmer group activities on biochar production, preparation, application, and management. Farmers should also be provided with appropriate technical information on suitable application rates and methods to promote effective soil improvement and sustainable agricultural production.
