Effect of Agricultural Extension on Farmers’ Adoption of Crop Recovery Practices After Flooding

Abstract

Flooding is a major agricultural hazard that can cause crop damage, soil degradation, nutrient loss, erosion, and disruption of farm activities. Flood-affected crops may experience prolonged waterlogging, physical damage, nutrient deficiencies, and increased exposure to pests and diseases. Appropriate crop recovery practices are therefore important for restoring agricultural production and reducing further losses after flooding. Agricultural extension services can provide farmers with relevant information, technical advice, and practical guidance on managing damaged crops and restoring affected farmland. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ adoption of crop recovery practices after flooding. The study will assess how access to agricultural extension services influences farmers’ use of recommended recovery practices following flood events. It will also determine the extent to which farmers adopt appropriate measures for restoring affected crops, managing damaged soils, controlling secondary production problems, and resuming agricultural activities. The study will focus on agricultural extension services, crop recovery practices, flood-affected crops, soil rehabilitation, waterlogging management, nutrient restoration, replanting decisions, crop sanitation, pest and disease management, soil moisture management, and post-flood farm rehabilitation. Attention will also be given to farmers’ frequency of extension contact, access to technical information, practical demonstrations, and advisory support concerning crop recovery after flooding. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers through structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their access to agricultural extension services and adoption of crop recovery practices after flooding. Descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while correlation and regression analysis may be employed to determine the relationship between agricultural extension and farmers’ adoption of crop recovery practices. The study is expected to reveal that agricultural extension may positively influence farmers’ adoption of crop recovery practices after flooding. Farmers with greater access to extension advice may be more likely to adopt appropriate practices such as removing excess water, rehabilitating affected soils, replacing severely damaged crops, restoring soil nutrients, monitoring for pests and diseases, and applying suitable crop management practices. The level of adoption may vary according to the severity of flooding, availability of farm resources, frequency of extension contact, and suitability of recommended recovery measures. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, government agricultural agencies, disaster management organizations, irrigation authorities, non-governmental organizations, and researchers. The findings may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes that support farmers after flood events. The study may also assist extension personnel in developing practical recovery guidelines and training programmes that enable farmers to restore affected farms and reduce prolonged production losses. The study concludes that agricultural extension can play an important role in promoting farmers’ adoption of appropriate crop recovery practices after flooding by providing timely information, technical guidance, and practical support. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen post-flood advisory services, provide practical demonstrations of crop and soil recovery techniques, and improve farmers’ access to timely technical information for restoring flood-affected agricultural land.
