Effect of Agricultural Extension on Farmers’ Adoption of Farm Enterprise Diversification

Abstract

Farm enterprise diversification involves the integration of different agricultural enterprises within a farming operation to improve resource use, income opportunities, and farm resilience. Farmers may diversify through combinations of crop production, livestock, poultry, fisheries, beekeeping, agro-processing, and other agricultural activities. Agricultural extension services can provide farmers with information, technical advice, demonstrations, and enterprise management guidance that may help them identify suitable diversification opportunities and adopt appropriate farm enterprises. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ adoption of farm enterprise diversification. It will assess the extent to which extension services provide information and advisory support that influence farmers’ decisions to diversify their agricultural enterprises. The study will also determine the relationship between farmers’ access to agricultural extension services and their adoption of different farm enterprise combinations. The study will focus on farmers’ access to extension information, frequency of extension contact, advisory visits, demonstrations, enterprise management training, and information on alternative agricultural enterprises. It will examine farmers’ adoption of diversification practices involving crop-livestock integration, crop production combined with poultry or fisheries, livestock and poultry enterprises, beekeeping, agro-processing, and other suitable agricultural activities. Information provided by extension agents on enterprise selection, production requirements, resource allocation, marketing, risk management, and enterprise profitability will also be considered. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their access to agricultural extension services and adoption of farm enterprise diversification practices. The data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation. Correlation and regression analysis will also be used to examine the relationship between agricultural extension services and farmers’ adoption of farm enterprise diversification. The study is expected to reveal that agricultural extension may have a positive effect on farmers’ adoption of farm enterprise diversification. Farmers who receive regular advisory services, enterprise management information, and practical demonstrations may have greater awareness of alternative enterprises and may be more likely to combine different agricultural activities. However, limited extension coverage, inadequate capital, lack of technical skills, limited access to inputs and markets, insufficient information on alternative enterprises, and resource constraints may limit farmers’ ability to diversify their farm operations. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, government agricultural agencies, agricultural development programmes, financial institutions, cooperative organisations, non-governmental organisations, policymakers, and researchers. The findings may provide useful information for improving extension strategies aimed at promoting suitable farm enterprise diversification. The study may also assist extension organisations in developing training programmes on enterprise selection, production management, marketing, resource allocation, and risk management for diversified farming operations. The study concludes that agricultural extension services can contribute to farmers’ adoption of farm enterprise diversification by providing relevant information, technical guidance, and practical support for identifying and managing alternative agricultural enterprises. It is therefore recommended that extension agencies should strengthen advisory programmes on enterprise diversification and provide farmers with practical information on suitable enterprise combinations, production requirements, market opportunities, and management practices. Collaboration among extension agencies, financial institutions, farmer organisations, and agricultural development programmes should also be encouraged to support farmers interested in diversifying their farm enterprises.
