Effect of Agricultural Extension on Farmers’ Adoption of Farm Labour Supervision Practices

Abstract

Farm labour supervision is an important aspect of agricultural farm management because effective coordination and monitoring of farm workers can improve task completion, labour productivity, time management, and the efficient use of farm resources. Farmers who manage hired or family labour may encounter challenges in assigning duties, monitoring work progress, maintaining work standards, and ensuring timely completion of farm operations. Agricultural extension can provide farmers with management knowledge and practical guidance that may improve their ability to supervise farm labour effectively. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ adoption of farm labour supervision practices. The study will assess farmers’ access to agricultural extension services, determine their knowledge of recommended labour supervision practices, and examine the extent to which extension support influences their adoption of effective methods of supervising farm workers. It will also assess the frequency of extension contact and the types of farm management information provided to farmers. The study will focus on agricultural extension, farm labour supervision, farmers’ knowledge, extension contact, labour allocation, task assignment, work scheduling, worker monitoring, performance assessment, communication with farm workers, attendance monitoring, work standards, labour productivity, record keeping, and adoption of recommended labour supervision practices. Information will be obtained from farmers to determine their exposure to extension services and the extent to which the information received is applied in managing farm labour. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate field assessment methods. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between agricultural extension and farmers’ adoption of farm labour supervision practices. The study is expected to reveal that agricultural extension may improve farmers’ knowledge and adoption of effective farm labour supervision practices. Farmers with regular access to extension information, training, and advisory services may demonstrate greater use of systematic task assignment, work scheduling, worker monitoring, performance assessment, and labour record-keeping practices. The study may also indicate that practical extension guidance contributes to improved coordination and management of farm labour. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, farm managers, agricultural cooperatives, researchers, non-governmental organizations, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes that address farm management and labour-related challenges. The findings may also assist extension personnel in developing practical training programmes that improve farmers’ capacity to organize, supervise, and monitor farm labour effectively. The study concludes that agricultural extension is an important source of knowledge and technical support for improving farmers’ adoption of farm labour supervision practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen training, farm visits, demonstrations, and advisory services on labour planning, task assignment, work scheduling, worker monitoring, performance assessment, and labour record keeping. Such support may improve farm labour management and contribute to more efficient agricultural production.
