Effect of Agricultural Extension on Farmers’ Adoption of Heat Stress Management Practices

Abstract

Heat stress is an important occupational and environmental risk that farmers may experience when carrying out agricultural activities under high temperatures, particularly during prolonged periods of hot weather. Excessive heat exposure can cause fatigue, dehydration, reduced concentration, reduced work capacity, and other heat-related health problems that may affect agricultural productivity and safety. Agricultural extension services can provide farmers with relevant information and practical guidance on recognising heat stress and adopting appropriate measures to manage heat exposure during farm operations. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ adoption of heat stress management practices. It will assess the extent to which agricultural extension services improve farmers’ knowledge and use of recommended measures for preventing and managing heat stress. The study will also determine the influence of extension education, advisory visits, training programmes, and practical demonstrations on farmers’ adoption of appropriate heat management practices during agricultural activities. The study will focus on agricultural extension, farmers’ knowledge of heat stress, heat exposure, hydration practices, rest periods, work scheduling, protective clothing, shade provision, weather information, occupational safety, and adoption of heat stress management practices. It will also assess farmers’ sources of information on heat-related risks and determine the extent to which extension agents provide guidance on adjusting farm activities and protecting farmers during periods of high temperature. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to agricultural extension services, knowledge of heat stress risks, and adoption of recommended management practices. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ adoption of heat stress management practices. The study is expected to reveal that agricultural extension may have a significant effect on farmers’ adoption of heat stress management practices. Farmers who receive regular extension education and timely information may demonstrate greater adoption of practices such as adequate water intake, regular rest periods, adjustment of working hours, use of appropriate clothing, access to shade, and monitoring of weather conditions. The level of adoption may also vary according to farmers’ frequency of extension contact, farming activities, access to weather information, and availability of appropriate resources. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, occupational safety organisations, health professionals, farmer cooperatives, government agencies, and agricultural researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening agricultural extension programmes that address heat-related occupational risks. The findings may also assist relevant agencies in developing practical training programmes and information materials that promote safer farm work during periods of high temperature. The study concludes that agricultural extension can contribute to improved adoption of heat stress management practices by increasing farmers’ knowledge of heat-related risks and promoting appropriate protective measures. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies integrate heat stress education into farmer training programmes, provide timely weather and heat-risk information, and promote practical measures such as adequate hydration, rest periods, work scheduling, shade, and appropriate clothing. These measures may improve farmers’ safety and ability to carry out agricultural activities under high-temperature conditions.
