Effect of Agricultural Extension on Farmers’ Adoption of Improved Fruit Production Practices
Abstract
Improved fruit production practices involve the use of recommended agricultural techniques and technologies aimed at increasing fruit yield, quality, profitability, and sustainability. These practices may include the use of improved planting materials, proper land preparation, appropriate spacing, pruning, irrigation, soil fertility management, pest and disease control, weed management, mulching, harvesting, and post-harvest handling. Agricultural extension plays an important role in providing farmers with technical information, training, demonstrations, and advisory services that can improve their awareness and adoption of recommended fruit production practices. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ adoption of improved fruit production practices. The study will assess the level of adoption of improved fruit production practices among farmers and determine the extent to which agricultural extension services influence their use of recommended production techniques. It will also examine farmers’ access to extension services, frequency of extension contact, and the major sources of information available to fruit producers. The study will focus on farmers’ adoption of improved fruit varieties, appropriate planting and spacing techniques, pruning, grafting, irrigation, fertilizer and manure application, mulching, weed control, pest and disease management, soil conservation, orchard sanitation, harvesting, and post-harvest handling practices. Attention will also be given to the extension methods used to promote these practices, including farm visits, demonstrations, training programmes, group meetings, field days, farmer field schools, and agricultural advisory services. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected fruit farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on farmers’ exposure to agricultural extension services and their adoption of improved fruit production practices. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviations, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to determine the relationship between agricultural extension services and farmers’ adoption of improved fruit production practices. The study is expected to reveal that farmers with greater access to agricultural extension services may demonstrate higher levels of adoption of improved fruit production practices. Regular extension contact, practical demonstrations, training, and access to relevant technical information may contribute to improved adoption of recommended techniques. The study may also identify constraints affecting adoption, including limited extension coverage, high cost of inputs, inadequate access to improved planting materials, insufficient technical knowledge, irrigation challenges, and limited availability of production resources. The study will be useful to fruit farmers, agricultural extension agents, horticultural organisations, farmer associations, agricultural development agencies, government institutions, researchers, and policymakers. The findings may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes designed to promote improved fruit production. Increased adoption of appropriate practices may contribute to improved fruit yield and quality, better resource management, reduced production losses, increased farm income, and improved livelihoods among fruit-producing households. The study concludes that agricultural extension is an important factor in promoting farmers’ adoption of improved fruit production practices by providing relevant knowledge, technical guidance, and practical support. It is therefore recommended that extension agencies strengthen fruit production programmes through regular farm visits, practical demonstrations, training, field days, and farmer-based advisory services. Farmers should also be supported with improved planting materials, appropriate inputs, irrigation information, and timely technical guidance to encourage wider adoption of improved fruit production practices.
