Effect of Agricultural Extension on Farmers’ Adoption of Improved Mounding Practices

Abstract

Improved mounding practices are important farm management techniques used to create suitable planting structures, improve soil conditions, support root development, and enhance crop establishment and productivity. Properly constructed mounds can improve soil drainage, reduce waterlogging, facilitate effective planting, and support better management of crops such as yam, cassava, and other crops grown under mound-based production systems. Agricultural extension services can provide farmers with information and practical guidance on appropriate mounding techniques. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ adoption of improved mounding practices. It will assess farmers’ exposure to agricultural extension services and determine the extent to which they adopt recommended mounding practices. The study will also examine the relationship between access to agricultural extension and farmers’ adoption of improved methods of mound construction and management. The study will focus on farmers’ adoption of practices such as appropriate mound size and spacing, proper mound shape and height, suitable mound construction methods, selection of appropriate planting locations, use of organic materials where necessary, maintenance of mound structure, erosion control, and proper timing of mound preparation. It will also consider farmers’ exposure to extension visits, demonstrations, training programmes, field days, advisory meetings, and other agricultural information relating to improved mounding practices. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to measure their exposure to agricultural extension services and adoption of improved mounding practices. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, adoption indices, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the extent of adoption and the relationship between agricultural extension and farmers’ adoption of improved mounding practices. The study is expected to reveal that farmers with greater exposure to agricultural extension services may demonstrate higher adoption of improved mounding practices. Regular extension contact, practical demonstrations, and training may improve farmers’ understanding of appropriate mound construction, spacing, dimensions, maintenance, and soil management. However, inadequate extension coverage, labour requirements, limited access to appropriate information, high labour costs, and farmers’ reliance on traditional practices may constrain the adoption of improved mounding methods. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, crop production specialists, cooperatives, policymakers, researchers, and non-governmental organisations. It may provide useful information on the role of agricultural extension in promoting improved mounding practices and supporting efficient crop production. The findings may also assist extension organisations in designing practical advisory programmes that address farmers’ specific needs regarding mound preparation and management. The study concludes that agricultural extension is important for improving farmers’ adoption of appropriate mounding practices and promoting efficient crop production. It is therefore recommended that extension agencies strengthen practical training, demonstrations, field visits, and advisory services on improved mound construction and management. Extension agents should also encourage farmers to adopt appropriate mound dimensions, spacing, timing, and maintenance practices suited to their production conditions.
