Effect of Agricultural Extension on Farmers’ Adoption of Low-Disturbance Farming Practices
Abstract
Low-disturbance farming practices involve agricultural production methods that minimize disruption of the soil and surrounding farm environment while maintaining productive use of farmland. Practices such as reduced tillage, minimum soil disturbance, residue retention, controlled field operations, and appropriate soil-cover management can contribute to soil structure conservation, moisture retention, erosion reduction, and sustainable agricultural production. Agricultural extension provides farmers with knowledge, technical guidance, and practical information that can influence their understanding and adoption of these practices. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ adoption of low-disturbance farming practices. It will assess the extent to which farmers’ exposure to agricultural extension services influences their knowledge, awareness, and application of low-disturbance farming methods. The study will also determine the level of farmers’ adoption of selected practices and examine the contribution of extension contact, training, demonstrations, and advisory services to their adoption. The study will focus on agricultural extension, extension contact, extension training, farmers’ knowledge, low-disturbance farming, reduced tillage, minimum tillage, residue retention, soil-cover management, erosion control, soil moisture conservation, and sustainable crop production. Attention will be given to the forms of extension support received by farmers and the extent to which such support provides practical information on reducing unnecessary soil disturbance during farm operations. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to agricultural extension services, knowledge of low-disturbance farming practices, and level of adoption. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the relationship between agricultural extension and farmers’ adoption of low-disturbance farming practices. The study is expected to reveal that farmers with greater access to agricultural extension services may demonstrate higher levels of knowledge and adoption of low-disturbance farming practices. Extension education, demonstrations, farm visits, and technical advisory services may improve farmers’ understanding of the benefits and application of reduced soil disturbance techniques. However, adoption levels may vary according to farmers’ access to appropriate farm equipment, labour availability, farm size, financial resources, and perceived benefits of the practices. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, environmental organisations, policymakers, and researchers. It may provide information for improving extension programmes aimed at promoting soil conservation and sustainable agricultural production. The findings may also assist extension agencies in developing practical training and demonstration activities that address farmers’ knowledge gaps and encourage the appropriate use of low-disturbance farming practices. The study concludes that agricultural extension can play an important role in improving farmers’ knowledge and adoption of low-disturbance farming practices. It is therefore recommended that extension agencies strengthen farmer training, demonstrations, field visits, and advisory services on reduced tillage, residue management, soil-cover practices, and other methods that minimize unnecessary soil disturbance. Farmers should also be encouraged to adopt suitable low-disturbance practices that support soil conservation and sustainable farm productivity.
