Effect of Agricultural Extension on Farmers’ Adoption of Moringa Seed Production Practices

Abstract

Moringa seed production is an important agricultural activity that provides opportunities for farmers to produce quality planting materials, generate income, and diversify their agricultural enterprises. The quality and availability of moringa seeds are important for successful establishment and expansion of moringa plantations. However, effective seed production requires appropriate knowledge of plant selection, flowering management, pollination, maturity assessment, harvesting, drying, cleaning, and storage. Agricultural extension can provide farmers with the technical information and practical guidance needed to improve their adoption of recommended moringa seed production practices. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ adoption of moringa seed production practices. The study will assess farmers’ access to agricultural extension services, determine their knowledge of recommended moringa seed production techniques, and examine the extent to which extension support influences their adoption of appropriate seed production practices. It will also assess the frequency of extension contact and the types of technical information provided to moringa farmers. The study will focus on agricultural extension, moringa seed production, farmers’ knowledge, extension contact, mother plant selection, flowering management, pollination, seed maturity assessment, seed harvesting, drying, cleaning, grading, storage, seed quality maintenance, and adoption of recommended seed production practices. Information will be obtained from moringa farmers to determine their exposure to extension services and the extent to which the information received is applied in their seed production activities. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected moringa farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate field observation methods. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between agricultural extension and farmers’ adoption of moringa seed production practices. The study is expected to reveal that agricultural extension may improve farmers’ knowledge and adoption of recommended moringa seed production practices. Farmers with regular access to extension agents, practical demonstrations, and technical advisory information may demonstrate greater adoption of appropriate plant selection, maturity assessment, harvesting, drying, cleaning, grading, and storage practices. The study may also indicate that regular extension contact and timely technical information contribute to improved management of moringa seed production activities. The study will be useful to moringa farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, seed producers, research institutions, agricultural cooperatives, non-governmental organizations, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes aimed at improving the production and management of quality moringa seeds. The findings may also assist extension personnel in identifying specific seed production practices that require greater attention during farmer training and advisory activities. The study concludes that agricultural extension is an important source of technical knowledge and support for improving farmers’ adoption of moringa seed production practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen regular farm visits, practical demonstrations, farmer training, and follow-up advisory services for moringa seed producers. Extension programmes should emphasize proper plant selection, seed maturity assessment, harvesting, drying, cleaning, grading, and storage practices to support the production of quality moringa seeds and sustainable agricultural enterprise development.
