Effect of Agricultural Extension on Farmers’ Adoption of Produce Shelf-Life Monitoring
Abstract
Sesame production is an important agricultural activity that contributes to food supply, income generation, employment, and diversification of smallholder farming systems. Intercropping sesame with compatible crops can provide opportunities for efficient use of available farmland, improve resource utilization, and support diversified farm output. However, successful intercropping requires appropriate knowledge of crop combinations, planting arrangements, spacing, timing, and crop management. Extension education can provide farmers with the technical information and practical skills needed to adopt suitable sesame intercropping practices. This study will examine the effect of extension education on farmers’ adoption of sesame intercropping practices. The study will assess farmers’ exposure to extension education, determine their knowledge of recommended intercropping practices, and examine the extent to which extension education influences their adoption of sesame-based intercropping techniques. It will also assess the frequency of extension contact and the types of information provided to farmers on crop combination and intercropping management. The study will focus on extension education, sesame intercropping practices, farmers’ knowledge, extension contact, crop combination, planting arrangement, spacing, planting time, population management, soil fertility management, weed control, pest management, field management, and adoption of recommended intercropping techniques. Information will be obtained from sesame farmers to determine their exposure to extension education and the extent to which the knowledge acquired is applied in their farming activities. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected sesame farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate field observation methods. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between extension education and farmers’ adoption of sesame intercropping practices. The study is expected to reveal that extension education may improve farmers’ knowledge and adoption of recommended sesame intercropping practices. Farmers who receive regular extension training, practical demonstrations, and technical advisory support may demonstrate greater adoption of appropriate crop combinations, planting arrangements, spacing, and crop management practices. The study may also indicate that regular extension contact and timely technical information contribute to farmers’ effective application of sesame intercropping techniques. The study will be useful to sesame farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, researchers, agricultural cooperatives, non-governmental organizations, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes aimed at promoting efficient intercropping practices and improving farm productivity. The findings may also assist extension personnel in developing practical training programmes that address farmers’ specific challenges in managing sesame-based intercropping systems. The study concludes that extension education is an important source of technical knowledge and practical support for improving farmers’ adoption of sesame intercropping practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer training, practical demonstrations, farm visits, and follow-up advisory services on sesame intercropping. Extension programmes should emphasize appropriate crop combinations, planting arrangements, spacing, timing, and crop management practices to support sustainable and productive sesame-based farming systems.
