Effect of Agricultural Extension on Farmers’ Adoption of Quail Egg Handling Practices

Abstract

Quail egg handling is an important aspect of quail production because proper handling practices help maintain egg quality, safety, cleanliness, and market value after collection. Appropriate handling involves timely collection, careful cleaning, sorting, grading, packaging, storage, and transportation under suitable conditions. Poor handling can result in egg breakage, contamination, quality deterioration, and economic losses to farmers. Agricultural extension provides farmers with technical information and practical guidance on recommended egg handling practices. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ adoption of quail egg handling practices. The study will assess the extent of farmers’ access to agricultural extension services and determine how extension influences their adoption of recommended quail egg handling practices. It will examine farmers’ exposure to extension visits, training, demonstrations, advisory services, and educational materials relating to quail egg management. The study will also assess the extent to which farmers apply recommended practices for egg collection, sorting, cleaning, grading, packaging, storage, and transportation. The study will focus on agricultural extension, farmers, quail egg handling, egg collection, egg sorting, egg grading, egg cleaning, packaging, storage, transportation, egg hygiene, contamination prevention, egg quality, post-production management, and quail production. Information will be obtained on farmers’ knowledge and application of recommended egg handling procedures from collection through marketing. The study will also identify challenges such as inadequate extension contact, limited access to suitable packaging materials, poor storage facilities, insufficient technical knowledge, and financial constraints. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from quail farmers through structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on access to agricultural extension services and adoption of quail egg handling practices. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentages, mean scores, and standard deviations. Inferential techniques such as correlation and regression analysis may also be used to determine the relationship between agricultural extension and farmers’ adoption of recommended quail egg handling practices. The study is expected to reveal that agricultural extension may have a positive effect on farmers’ adoption of quail egg handling practices. Farmers who receive regular extension training, demonstrations, farm visits, and advisory information may demonstrate greater knowledge and improved application of appropriate egg collection, sorting, grading, cleaning, packaging, storage, and transportation practices. The study may also reveal that inadequate extension coverage, limited access to appropriate handling facilities, high packaging costs, poor storage conditions, and insufficient technical knowledge could constrain the consistent adoption of recommended practices. The study will be useful to quail farmers, agricultural extension agents, poultry development agencies, veterinary professionals, policymakers, researchers, egg processors, marketers, and other stakeholders involved in quail production. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes on quail egg handling and improving farmers’ capacity to maintain egg quality after collection. The findings may also assist relevant organisations in developing practical training programmes that promote hygienic handling, proper storage, improved packaging, and reduced egg losses. The study concludes that agricultural extension is important for improving farmers’ knowledge and adoption of appropriate quail egg handling practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies and poultry development organisations should provide regular practical training, demonstrations, farm visits, and advisory services on egg collection, sorting, cleaning, grading, packaging, storage, and transportation. Extension programmes should also promote access to suitable handling and storage materials to support improved egg quality, reduced losses, and sustainable quail production.
