Effect of Agricultural Extension on Farmers’ Adoption of Weather-Based Planting Decisions
Abstract
The study examines the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ adoption of weather-based planting decisions. Weather conditions such as rainfall patterns, temperature, humidity, and seasonal changes are important factors that influence the timing of agricultural activities. Farmers who have access to relevant weather information and extension guidance may be better positioned to make appropriate planting decisions and reduce risks associated with unfavorable weather conditions. The study will assess the level of farmers’ access to agricultural extension services and determine the extent to which extension personnel provide information on weather conditions, seasonal forecasts, planting periods, and weather-related farm management practices. It will also examine farmers’ level of adoption of weather-based planting decisions and the usefulness of extension information in guiding their planting activities. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires administered through an appropriate sampling procedure. The data collected will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation, while an appropriate inferential statistical technique will be used to determine the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ adoption of weather-based planting decisions. The study is expected to find that farmers who receive regular and relevant extension information are more likely to consider weather conditions when determining planting dates. Extension services are also expected to improve farmers’ awareness of seasonal weather patterns and encourage the use of weather forecasts in agricultural planning. However, inadequate access to extension personnel, limited weather information, poor communication channels, and difficulties in interpreting weather forecasts may constitute challenges to adoption. The findings will be useful to agricultural extension officers, policymakers, agricultural development agencies, and farmers’ organizations by providing information on the importance of extension services in promoting climate-informed planting decisions. The study may also contribute to efforts aimed at improving the delivery of timely and understandable weather information to farming communities. The study will conclude that effective agricultural extension services can contribute to improved weather-based planting decisions among farmers. It will recommend strengthening extension education on weather information, improving communication between meteorological and agricultural extension institutions, and providing farmers with timely, accessible, and understandable seasonal weather information to support appropriate planting decisions.
