Effect of Agricultural Extension on Farmers’ Knowledge of Agricultural Marketing

Abstract

Agricultural marketing is an important component of farming because it connects farmers with buyers and enables them to obtain income from their agricultural products. Farmers require adequate knowledge of market prices, product quality, market channels, negotiation, storage, transportation, and timing of sales to make informed marketing decisions. Agricultural extension services can provide farmers with relevant market information and guidance that may improve their understanding of agricultural marketing activities and opportunities. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ knowledge of agricultural marketing. It will assess how extension contact, advisory information, farmer training, market-related education, and communication activities influence farmers’ understanding of agricultural marketing processes. The study will also examine farmers’ knowledge of different marketing channels and practices used in the sale and distribution of agricultural products. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of market information, prevailing prices, market channels, product grading, quality standards, negotiation, collective marketing, storage, transportation, value addition, and timing of product sales. It will also assess farmers’ exposure to extension agents and other agricultural information sources that provide guidance on market opportunities and marketing decisions. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate knowledge assessment instruments. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while correlation and regression analysis may be used to determine the relationship between agricultural extension exposure and farmers’ knowledge of agricultural marketing. The study is expected to reveal that exposure to agricultural extension services may improve farmers’ knowledge of agricultural marketing. Farmers who receive regular market information, advisory support, and marketing-related training may demonstrate greater understanding of market channels, price information, negotiation practices, product quality requirements, and appropriate timing of sales. The study may also identify specific areas of marketing knowledge where farmers require additional extension support. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural cooperatives, government agricultural agencies, market organisations, non-governmental organisations, policymakers, and agricultural researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening market-oriented extension services, improving farmers’ access to market information, supporting better marketing decisions, and enhancing farmers’ participation in agricultural markets. The study concludes that agricultural extension can contribute to improving farmers’ knowledge of agricultural marketing by providing timely market information, training, and advisory support. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension organisations strengthen market-oriented education, price information dissemination, marketing demonstrations, and advisory services to improve farmers’ knowledge and ability to participate effectively in agricultural markets.
