Effect of Agricultural Extension on Farmers’ Knowledge of Pest Scouting Techniques

Abstract

Pest scouting is an important crop protection practice that involves the systematic observation, identification, monitoring, and assessment of pests and pest-related damage in agricultural fields. Effective pest scouting enables farmers to detect pest problems early, determine the severity of infestations, and make informed decisions about appropriate control measures. Agricultural extension can provide farmers with the technical knowledge and practical skills required to conduct effective pest scouting and improve crop protection. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ knowledge of pest scouting techniques. It will assess farmers’ exposure to agricultural extension services and determine how extension contact influences their knowledge of pest scouting practices. The study will also identify areas of pest scouting where farmers may require additional technical education and practical support. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of field inspection, pest identification, sampling methods, pest counting, identification of pest damage symptoms, scouting frequency, monitoring of crop growth stages, recording of pest observations, use of scouting tools, and interpretation of pest population levels. Attention will also be given to extension activities such as farm visits, practical demonstrations, training programmes, farmer group meetings, field days, and provision of crop protection information. These services may improve farmers’ ability to identify pest problems and monitor pest populations accurately. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires, practical pest identification exercises, and knowledge assessment instruments. Descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize farmers’ knowledge levels, while knowledge scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis will be used to determine the relationship between agricultural extension and farmers’ knowledge of pest scouting techniques. The study is expected to reveal that farmers with greater exposure to agricultural extension services may demonstrate higher levels of knowledge of pest scouting techniques. Extension contact may improve farmers’ ability to identify pests, assess infestation levels, monitor crop fields, record observations, and determine appropriate pest management responses. However, limited extension contact, inadequate practical demonstrations, lack of scouting equipment, limited technical information, and farmers’ reliance on routine pesticide application may contribute to knowledge gaps. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, entomologists, crop protection specialists, agricultural development agencies, researchers, government institutions, and non-governmental organizations. It may provide useful information on the contribution of agricultural extension to farmers’ knowledge of pest scouting and identify specific areas where additional technical support is required. The findings may also assist agricultural agencies in designing practical pest monitoring and integrated pest management training programmes. The study concludes that agricultural extension can play an important role in improving farmers’ knowledge of pest scouting techniques. It is therefore recommended that extension agencies strengthen practical field training, organize regular pest scouting demonstrations, provide farmers with appropriate scouting materials, and promote systematic field monitoring. These measures can improve early pest detection, support informed pest management decisions, reduce unnecessary pesticide application, and contribute to sustainable crop production.
