Effect of Agricultural Extension on Farmers’ Participation in Agricultural Cooperatives
Abstract
Agricultural cooperatives provide farmers with opportunities to work collectively, access agricultural information and resources, improve marketing activities, and strengthen their participation in agricultural development programmes. However, farmers may require adequate information and encouragement to understand the benefits of cooperative membership and participate actively in cooperative activities. Agricultural extension services can provide information, advisory support, training, and mobilization that may encourage farmers to join and participate in agricultural cooperatives. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ participation in agricultural cooperatives. It will assess how extension contact, advisory information, farmer training, group meetings, and mobilization activities influence farmers’ decisions to participate in cooperative organisations. The study will also examine the extent to which farmers who receive agricultural extension services participate in cooperative meetings, collective activities, resource sharing, and other cooperative programmes. The study will focus on extension visits, agricultural advisory services, farmer training, cooperative awareness activities, group mobilisation, information dissemination, and interactions between extension agents and farmers. Farmers’ participation will be assessed based on cooperative membership, meeting attendance, involvement in group activities, participation in collective decision-making, contribution to cooperative programmes, and use of cooperative services. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate assessment instruments. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while correlation and regression analysis may be used to determine the relationship between agricultural extension services and farmers’ participation in agricultural cooperatives. The study is expected to reveal that regular access to agricultural extension services may encourage greater participation in agricultural cooperatives. Farmers who receive relevant information, training, advisory support, and mobilisation from extension agents may demonstrate greater awareness of cooperative activities and stronger involvement in cooperative programmes. The findings may also show that frequent extension contact and effective information dissemination contribute to farmers’ willingness to participate actively in cooperative organisations. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, cooperative societies, government agricultural agencies, non-governmental organisations, policymakers, and agricultural researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension approaches, promoting cooperative membership, improving farmer mobilisation, and encouraging collective participation in agricultural development activities. The study concludes that agricultural extension services can play an important role in informing and mobilising farmers to participate in agricultural cooperatives. It is therefore recommended that extension organisations strengthen cooperative awareness campaigns, farmer training, regular advisory visits, and group mobilisation activities to encourage wider and more active participation of farmers in agricultural cooperatives.
