Effect of Agricultural Extension Services on Farmers’ Adoption of E-Commerce Platforms for Farm Produce
Abstract
E-commerce platforms have become increasingly relevant to agricultural marketing by providing farmers with digital channels through which farm produce can be advertised, marketed, sold, and delivered to consumers, traders, processors, and other buyers. These platforms may enable farmers to access wider markets, obtain market information, communicate with buyers, negotiate prices, receive orders, and facilitate electronic payments. Agricultural extension services can support farmers in understanding and using these platforms by providing information, training, demonstrations, and technical guidance. Examining the effect of extension services on farmers’ adoption of e-commerce platforms is therefore important for understanding the role of agricultural extension in modernising farm produce marketing. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension services on farmers’ adoption of e-commerce platforms for farm produce. It will assess farmers’ exposure to extension services and determine how such services influence their awareness, knowledge, and adoption of e-commerce platforms. The study will also examine the extent to which farmers use online platforms to market and sell their agricultural products and identify the major challenges affecting their participation in digital agricultural commerce. The study will focus on farmers’ use of online marketplaces, agricultural e-commerce websites, mobile applications, social media commerce platforms, and other digital platforms for selling farm produce. It will examine their use for product listing, digital advertising, price comparison, buyer communication, price negotiation, order management, electronic payments, and delivery arrangements. The study will also consider farmers’ access to smartphones, internet connectivity, digital literacy, extension contact, availability of digital marketing information, transaction costs, and confidence in conducting online sales. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to agricultural extension services, knowledge of e-commerce platforms, frequency of use, and level of adoption for farm produce marketing. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations, while correlation and regression analysis may be used to determine the relationship between agricultural extension services and farmers’ adoption of e-commerce platforms. The study is expected to reveal that farmers who have greater access to agricultural extension services may demonstrate higher levels of awareness, knowledge, and adoption of e-commerce platforms for farm produce. Extension services may improve farmers’ ability to advertise products, communicate with buyers, access market information, negotiate prices, process orders, and use electronic payment systems. However, challenges such as inadequate digital literacy, poor internet connectivity, high data costs, limited access to smartphones, concerns about online fraud, delivery difficulties, and limited technical support may constrain adoption. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, e-commerce platform providers, agricultural marketing organisations, farmer cooperatives, government agencies, policymakers, and researchers. The findings may provide useful information on the contribution of agricultural extension services to farmers’ participation in digital agricultural markets. Extension organisations may use the findings to strengthen digital marketing education, while e-commerce providers and agricultural agencies may use the information to improve the accessibility, affordability, security, and usability of online platforms for farm produce marketing. The study concludes that agricultural extension services can contribute to farmers’ adoption of e-commerce platforms by providing relevant knowledge, practical training, demonstrations, and technical support for digital agricultural marketing. It is therefore recommended that extension programmes incorporate e-commerce education into agricultural advisory activities and provide farmers with practical training on product listing, digital promotion, buyer communication, electronic payments, and online transaction management. Relevant stakeholders should also improve digital infrastructure, promote digital literacy, strengthen transaction security, and support reliable delivery systems to encourage wider adoption of e-commerce platforms for farm produce.
