Effect of Agricultural Extension Services on Farmers’ Adoption of Precision Agriculture Practices

Abstract

Agricultural extension services provide farmers with technical information, training, demonstrations, and advisory support that can facilitate the adoption of modern agricultural technologies. Precision agriculture involves the use of technologies and data-based approaches to improve the accuracy and efficiency of farm management, including the application of inputs, monitoring of crops, soil assessment, and resource allocation. The growing importance of precision agriculture makes effective extension support relevant for helping farmers understand and apply these practices in their farming activities. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension services on farmers’ adoption of precision agriculture practices. It will assess the extent to which extension services provide farmers with the knowledge, technical guidance, and practical support required to understand and use precision agriculture technologies. The study will also determine the relationship between farmers’ access to extension services and their adoption of precision agriculture practices. The study will focus on extension training, farm demonstrations, advisory visits, technology awareness programmes, field-based technical guidance, and information dissemination relating to precision agriculture. The precision agriculture practices to be examined will include soil testing and mapping, GPS-based farm mapping, remote sensing, satellite imagery, drone applications, variable-rate input application, digital farm monitoring, precision irrigation, and data-based farm management. Farmers’ access to relevant equipment, technical information, and support required for applying these practices will also be considered. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their access to agricultural extension services and adoption of precision agriculture practices. The data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation. Correlation and regression analysis will also be used to examine the relationship between agricultural extension services and farmers’ adoption of precision agriculture practices. The study is expected to reveal that agricultural extension services may have a positive effect on farmers’ adoption of precision agriculture practices. Farmers who receive regular extension training, demonstrations, advisory support, and technical information may demonstrate greater awareness and use of precision agriculture technologies. However, high costs of precision equipment, limited technical skills, inadequate extension personnel, poor digital infrastructure, limited access to technology, and insufficient financial resources may restrict adoption among some farmers. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, government agricultural agencies, technology providers, research institutions, non-governmental organisations, policymakers, and agricultural development programmes. The findings may provide useful information for improving extension strategies for disseminating precision agriculture technologies and supporting farmers in their practical application. The study may also assist agricultural agencies in identifying training and resource requirements for expanding the use of technology-based farm management practices. The study concludes that agricultural extension services can contribute to farmers’ understanding and adoption of precision agriculture practices by providing relevant knowledge, demonstrations, and technical guidance. It is therefore recommended that extension agencies should strengthen training and demonstration programmes on precision agriculture, improve farmers’ access to practical technical information, and promote appropriate digital and technology-based advisory services. Collaboration among extension organisations, technology providers, research institutions, and agricultural agencies should also be encouraged to improve farmers’ access to suitable precision agriculture technologies.
