Effect of Agricultural Extension Services on Farmers’ Adoption of Small-Scale Mushroom Enterprise Management

Abstract

Small-scale mushroom enterprise management involves the planning, production, handling, marketing, and general organization of mushroom farming activities at a relatively small production scale. Effective management is important for maintaining suitable production conditions, reducing losses, improving product quality, and enhancing the profitability and sustainability of mushroom enterprises. Agricultural extension services can provide farmers with relevant technical information, advisory support, and practical guidance needed to adopt appropriate management practices in mushroom production. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension services on farmers’ adoption of small-scale mushroom enterprise management practices. The study will assess farmers’ access to extension services relating to mushroom enterprise management and determine how such services influence their adoption of recommended management practices. It will also examine the role of extension agents in providing farmers with technical information and practical guidance for managing small-scale mushroom enterprises effectively. The study will focus on extension contact, advisory visits, extension training, mushroom production planning, substrate preparation, spawn management, environmental condition management, hygiene, pest and contamination control, harvesting, post-harvest handling, record keeping, cost management, and marketing practices. It will also consider farmers’ participation in extension demonstrations and other advisory activities related to the establishment and management of small-scale mushroom enterprises. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected mushroom farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their access to agricultural extension services and adoption of small-scale mushroom enterprise management practices. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the relationship between agricultural extension services and farmers’ adoption of recommended mushroom enterprise management practices. The study is expected to reveal that agricultural extension services may have a positive effect on farmers’ adoption of small-scale mushroom enterprise management practices. Farmers with greater access to extension training, advisory visits, demonstrations, and technical information may demonstrate higher adoption of appropriate production planning, hygiene, substrate management, contamination control, harvesting, record keeping, and marketing practices. The study may also reveal that limited extension contact, inadequate technical knowledge, high input costs, and restricted access to reliable mushroom production information can constrain farmers’ adoption of improved enterprise management practices. The study will be useful to mushroom farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, agribusiness organizations, policymakers, researchers, and rural development practitioners. It may provide useful information on the contribution of extension services to the development and management of small-scale mushroom enterprises. The findings may also assist relevant agencies in designing practical extension programmes that strengthen farmers’ technical, managerial, and entrepreneurial capacities for sustainable mushroom production. The study concludes that agricultural extension services are important in promoting farmers’ adoption of effective small-scale mushroom enterprise management practices because appropriate advisory support can improve farmers’ technical knowledge and management skills. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen regular training, farm visits, practical demonstrations, and advisory services on mushroom production planning, hygiene, substrate management, harvesting, record keeping, cost management, and marketing to improve enterprise performance and support sustainable small-scale mushroom production.
