Effect of Agricultural Extension Services on Farmers’ Knowledge of Precision Fertilizer Application

Abstract

Precision fertilizer application is an important agricultural practice that involves applying the appropriate type, quantity, timing, and placement of fertilizer according to crop requirements and field conditions. The practice can improve nutrient-use efficiency, reduce unnecessary fertilizer application, lower production costs, and support sustainable soil management. Agricultural extension services can provide farmers with the technical information and practical guidance needed to understand and apply precision fertilizer management practices effectively. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension services on farmers’ knowledge of precision fertilizer application. It will assess farmers’ access to extension services and determine how exposure to extension education, demonstrations, farm visits, and advisory information influences their knowledge of precision fertilizer application. The study will also identify areas of knowledge that may require additional extension support. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of soil testing, fertilizer types, recommended application rates, nutrient requirements, fertilizer placement, application timing, field-specific nutrient management, crop growth stages, and appropriate fertilizer equipment. Attention will also be given to extension activities such as training sessions, field demonstrations, individual farm visits, farmer group meetings, and distribution of fertilizer management information. These services may improve farmers’ understanding of efficient fertilizer application and reduce inappropriate fertilizer use. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires and knowledge assessment instruments. Descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while knowledge scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis will be used to determine the relationship between agricultural extension services and farmers’ knowledge of precision fertilizer application. The study is expected to reveal that farmers with greater exposure to agricultural extension services may demonstrate higher levels of knowledge of precision fertilizer application. Extension contact may improve farmers’ understanding of fertilizer rates, nutrient requirements, timing, placement, and soil-based fertilizer decisions. However, limited access to extension agents, inadequate soil-testing facilities, high cost of precision application technologies, limited technical materials, and insufficient practical demonstrations may constrain farmers’ acquisition of relevant knowledge. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, fertilizer suppliers, agricultural development agencies, researchers, government institutions, and non-governmental organizations. It may provide useful information on the role of agricultural extension services in improving farmers’ knowledge of efficient fertilizer management. The findings may also assist agricultural agencies in developing farmer-oriented training programmes that promote improved fertilizer decision-making and responsible nutrient management. The study concludes that agricultural extension services can play an important role in improving farmers’ knowledge of precision fertilizer application. It is therefore recommended that extension agencies strengthen farmer training, organize practical demonstrations on precision fertilizer techniques, promote access to soil-testing information, and provide farmers with clear guidance on fertilizer rates, timing, placement, and nutrient requirements. These measures can improve farmers’ fertilizer management decisions, enhance nutrient-use efficiency, and support sustainable agricultural production.
