Effect of Agricultural Extension Training on Farmers’ Knowledge of Sustainable Agriculture

Abstract

Agricultural extension training is an important means of providing farmers with practical knowledge, technical skills, and information required for effective and sustainable agricultural production. Sustainable agriculture involves farming practices that support productivity while conserving natural resources, protecting the environment, and maintaining the long-term productive capacity of farmland. Through extension training, farmers can learn about appropriate soil management, efficient resource use, environmental conservation, integrated pest management, and other practices that promote sustainable agricultural development. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension training on farmers’ knowledge of sustainable agriculture. It will assess how participation in extension training programmes influences farmers’ understanding of sustainable farming principles and recommended agricultural practices. The study will also examine farmers’ knowledge of soil conservation, efficient water use, organic matter management, crop diversification, integrated pest management, and other practices associated with sustainable agriculture. The study will focus on agricultural extension training, farmers’ knowledge, sustainable agriculture, soil conservation, water management, crop diversification, integrated pest management, resource conservation, environmental protection, and sustainable farming practices. Attention will be given to the nature, frequency, duration, and content of extension training received by farmers and the level of knowledge gained from such training. The study will assess farmers’ understanding of sustainable agricultural practices before and after exposure to relevant extension information where appropriate. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires, knowledge assessment questions, and relevant agricultural records where available. Descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentage analysis, mean scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between extension training and farmers’ knowledge of sustainable agriculture. Comparative analysis may also be used to examine differences in knowledge levels among farmers with different levels of exposure to extension training. The study is expected to reveal that agricultural extension training may have a positive effect on farmers’ knowledge of sustainable agriculture. Farmers who receive relevant and regular training may demonstrate greater understanding of resource conservation, environmentally responsible production methods, soil management, and other sustainable farming practices. The extent of knowledge gained may depend on the frequency, quality, relevance, and practical nature of the training provided. The study will be useful to agricultural extension officers, smallholder farmers, government agricultural agencies, non-governmental organizations, policymakers, agricultural development programmes, and researchers. It may provide useful information for improving the content and delivery of extension training programmes and strengthening farmers’ knowledge of sustainable agricultural practices. The findings may also assist agricultural institutions in designing practical training programmes that address farmers’ information and knowledge needs. The study concludes that agricultural extension training is an important source of knowledge for promoting sustainable agriculture among farmers. It is therefore recommended that extension agencies strengthen practical training programmes, demonstrations, field-based learning, and regular follow-up activities to improve farmers’ understanding of sustainable agricultural practices and support the long-term conservation and productive use of agricultural resources.
