Effect of Cooperative-Based Extension Programmes on Farmers’ Agricultural Knowledge
Abstract
Cooperative-based extension programmes provide agricultural information, technical guidance, training, and practical learning opportunities to farmers through organized cooperative groups. These programmes can create a platform where farmers interact with extension agents, share experiences, discuss production challenges, and learn about improved agricultural practices. Strengthening farmers’ agricultural knowledge through cooperative-based extension activities can support better understanding of modern production techniques and improve farmers’ ability to make informed decisions. This study will examine the effect of cooperative-based extension programmes on farmers’ agricultural knowledge. It will assess how participation in cooperative extension meetings, training sessions, demonstrations, and advisory activities influences farmers’ understanding of agricultural practices and technologies. The study will also examine the extent to which cooperative-based extension activities improve farmers’ knowledge of production, farm management, resource utilization, and agricultural decision-making. The study will focus on cooperative meetings, extension training, field demonstrations, group discussions, farmer-to-farmer learning, technical advisory services, and agricultural information dissemination. Farmers’ knowledge of improved production practices, soil management, crop and livestock management, pest management, input utilization, post-harvest practices, and other relevant agricultural technologies will be assessed. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers participating in agricultural cooperatives using structured questionnaires and appropriate knowledge assessment instruments. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while correlation and regression analysis may be used to determine the relationship between cooperative-based extension programmes and farmers’ agricultural knowledge. The study is expected to reveal that participation in cooperative-based extension programmes may improve farmers’ agricultural knowledge. Farmers who regularly participate in extension meetings, training activities, demonstrations, and group discussions may demonstrate greater understanding of improved agricultural practices and technologies. The study may also reveal differences in knowledge levels according to farmers’ exposure to cooperative extension activities and the quality of information provided. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural cooperatives, extension agents, government agricultural agencies, non-governmental organisations, policymakers, and agricultural researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening cooperative-based extension programmes, improving farmer training, encouraging knowledge sharing, and developing agricultural advisory approaches that respond to farmers’ information and production needs. The study concludes that cooperative-based extension programmes can provide an effective platform for improving farmers’ access to agricultural knowledge and technical information. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension organisations and cooperative societies strengthen regular training, practical demonstrations, group discussions, and farmer-to-farmer learning activities to improve farmers’ agricultural knowledge and support the application of improved farming practices.
