Effect of Extension Agents’ Mobility on Agricultural Advisory Service Delivery

Abstract

Extension agents’ mobility is an important factor in the delivery of agricultural advisory services because effective extension work requires regular movement between offices, farming communities, and individual farms. Adequate mobility enables extension agents to reach farmers, conduct farm visits, provide demonstrations, monitor production activities, and respond to farmers’ technical needs. Limitations in mobility may reduce the frequency and coverage of advisory activities and affect the ability of extension agents to provide timely agricultural information and support. This study will examine the effect of extension agents’ mobility on agricultural advisory service delivery. The study will assess the mobility conditions of extension agents, determine the level of agricultural advisory service delivery, and examine the influence of agents’ mobility on their ability to reach and support farmers. It will also identify mobility-related challenges that may affect the effectiveness and regularity of agricultural advisory activities. The study will focus on access to transportation, availability and condition of official vehicles or motorcycles, transportation costs, distance to farming communities, road conditions, frequency of field visits, travel time, and logistical support. It will also examine advisory service delivery through farm visits, farmer meetings, demonstrations, technical consultations, follow-up activities, information dissemination, and problem-solving support. The frequency and geographical coverage of extension activities will also be considered. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from extension agents using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on mobility conditions, transportation facilities, field travel, and advisory service delivery. Relevant information may also be obtained from available extension records. The data will be analysed using frequencies, percentages, means, standard deviations, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the relationship between extension agents’ mobility and agricultural advisory service delivery. The study is expected to reveal that better mobility conditions may be associated with more regular and wider delivery of agricultural advisory services. Extension agents with reliable transportation and adequate logistical support may be better positioned to conduct frequent farm visits, reach remote farming communities, organize demonstrations, and provide timely technical assistance. Conversely, poor road conditions, inadequate transportation facilities, high travel costs, and long distances may limit the frequency and coverage of advisory activities. The study will be useful to agricultural extension agents, farmers, agricultural development agencies, extension management authorities, farmers’ associations, policymakers, and agricultural researchers. The findings may provide useful information for improving transportation arrangements, logistical planning, field coverage, and resource allocation within agricultural extension systems. It may also assist extension managers in identifying mobility constraints that affect the accessibility and regularity of advisory services. The study concludes that extension agents’ mobility is an important consideration in the effective delivery of agricultural advisory services. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension authorities provide adequate and reliable transportation facilities, improve logistical support, and consider road and geographical conditions when planning field assignments. Regular maintenance of extension vehicles and appropriate mobility allowances should also be encouraged to facilitate timely and consistent advisory service delivery to farmers.
