Effect of Extension Communication Through Community Notice Boards on Farmers’ Access to Information

Abstract

Extension communication through community notice boards involves the dissemination of agricultural information by displaying relevant messages, announcements, recommendations, and notices in locations that are accessible to farmers within rural communities. Community notice boards can serve as simple and low-cost communication channels for sharing information on improved farming practices, agricultural training, input availability, market opportunities, weather information, and government agricultural programmes. Effective use of such communication channels may improve farmers’ access to timely and relevant agricultural information. This study will examine the effect of extension communication through community notice boards on farmers’ access to information. It will assess the extent to which information displayed on community notice boards improves farmers’ awareness and access to agricultural information. The study will also examine the frequency with which farmers use notice boards, the types of information accessed, and the perceived usefulness and relevance of the information communicated through this channel. The study will focus on extension communication, community notice boards, farmers’ access to information, agricultural information dissemination, information availability, information relevance, information timeliness, extension messages, agricultural production information, market information, input information, training announcements, and community-based communication. Attention will be given to the accessibility, visibility, location, content, language, frequency of updating, and clarity of agricultural information displayed on community notice boards. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to extension communication through community notice boards, frequency of access, types of information received, and perceived usefulness of the information. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the relationship between extension communication through community notice boards and farmers’ access to agricultural information. The study is expected to reveal that extension communication through community notice boards may improve farmers’ access to agricultural information where the boards are strategically located, regularly updated, clearly presented, and accessible to the target farming population. Farmers may benefit from information concerning production practices, agricultural inputs, extension activities, market opportunities, training programmes, and government interventions. However, access may be affected by irregular updating, poor visibility, unsuitable locations, language barriers, limited awareness, and inadequate agricultural content. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, community organisations, policymakers, and researchers. It may provide useful information for improving community-based agricultural communication and strengthening the delivery of extension messages to farmers. The findings may also assist extension agencies in integrating community notice boards with other communication channels to improve the reach, timeliness, and accessibility of agricultural information. The study concludes that extension communication through community notice boards can contribute to improving farmers’ access to relevant agricultural information when properly managed and regularly supported. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies and community organisations ensure that notice boards are strategically positioned, regularly updated, clearly designed, and supplied with timely and relevant agricultural information in languages that farmers can easily understand. Regular monitoring should also be undertaken to improve the effectiveness of community notice boards as extension communication channels.
